The absolute best thing about the mapping community is that is has reached the point of self growing, self generating, self sustaining, self challenging ... it is a living thing and I could be hit by a bus tomorrow (not that I want to be) and it would still continue.

Me : I prefer mother of mapping. Fathers can be like thought leaders, fire off one idea and expect magic to happen as someone else deals with the hard work. Mapping has been a much more hands on, involved, nurturing and generative approach.
