What do we mean when we talk about peer to peer #energy trading?

Just spent two thought-provoking days at @FSR_Energy for the second meeting of the Global Observatory on #P2PEnergy (GO-P2P). Here's my first attempt at a twitter thread to share some reflections on the event (1/)
First, some context: GO-P2P is an annex of the
@IEA @users_tcp, led by @UCL_Energy's @LexScn. One aim of the observatory is to build a global evidence base of case studies of #P2PEnergy, #TransactiveEnergy and #CommunitySelfConsumption models (2/)
The work of GO-P2P is divided into 5 subtasks, covering different aspects of #P2PEnergy models: power systems; ICT & hardware; transactions & markets; social & economic value; and policy & regulation (3/)
Case studies will be analysed from each subtask's perspective and brought together for international comparative analysis. This will help us share knowledge and understand which factors influence the success/failure of #P2PEnergy models in different countries and contexts (4/)
A key output from this will be a "readiness index" indicating how prepared a country is for the adoption of #P2PEnergy models. Worth noting, GO-P2P doesn't necessarily advocate these models, but aims to provide robust evidence on how feasible they are in various contexts (5/)
One key theme throughout was the tension between different goals of #P2PEnergy models: are we aiming to create social value through #CommunityEnergy and #EnergyDemocracy? Or are we trying to design efficient systems that focus on balancing the grid and saving CO2?(6/)
Views on question this seem crucial for understanding what we mean when we talk about the challenges of #P2PEnergy, as well as the value of these new systems - and who they create value for (7/)
There are huge challenges in this field: legal definitions of #P2PEnergy and similar models are still in flux; successful pilots may not work at scale; projects that deliver value for participants in a project may have unintended consequences for those outside of it (8/)
We hope the work of GO-P2P will help us better understand and begin to address these challenges. Next steps for the @UCL_Energy team: drafting a concept paper on defining characteristics of #P2PEnergy, #TransactiveEnergy and #CommunitySelfConsumption models (9/)
@UCL_Energy This is an on-going project (duration 3 years) and we'd love to get input from more participants, from as many countries as possible. Anyone interested in getting involved can get in touch with @LexScn or find out more here: userstcp.org/annex/peer-to-… (10/10)
