Dr. STELLA NYANZI IS FREE!

This is a great day for feminists everywhere, pan-African feminists and feminists around the world! A High Court quashed her conviction and sentencing. She has been in prison for a poem deemed “cyber harassment” about #Ugandan dictator Yoweri Museveni
In August 2019, the feminist scholar, activist and poet was sentenced to 18 months in prison for writing a poem wishing that Museveni’s mother’s birth canal had poisoned him during birth. Read the poem @drstellanyanzi wrote from prison and #BeBoldLikeNyanzi
Dr. Stella Nyanzi is one of my heroes. Her insistence on profanity in the face of patriarchy and dictatorship - the real profanity, the real offense, the real vulgarity - is legendary.

Fuck the patriarchy, everywhere. Fuck dictatorship, everywhere.
During her sentencing in Aug 2019, Nyanzi was not allowed to attend court but was beamed in from prison via video - she flashed her breasts and shouted “fuck you fuck you fuck you” in protest video via @rosebellk
Nyanzi is a hero. Her insistence on violating patriarchy’s rules by talking explicitly about taboo subjects—be they the president’s buttocks, sex, sexuality, queerness—should be studied everywhere as a masterclass in the power of refusing to obey the rules of “politeness.”
This is from a poem @drstellanyanzi wrote in prison about the power of flashing her breasts during her sentencing:

“My breasts were blazing bazookas-
Shooting down the injustices of injustice”
Women shall no longer wait for timid men

To fight for the liberation of Uganda

We pack missiles in our own pens and grenades in our mouths

And shoot our truths at the dictatorship

- Stella Nyanzi, from 45 poems she wrote upon turning 45 in prison

Thank you @RosebellK and other feminist sisters and comrades in #Uganda for keeping us updated through court and prison visits.

Everywhere I speak, I pay tribute to @drstellanyanzi.

e.g. on #Australian TV show Q&A.The episode is banned from rebroadcast for reasons including I said “fuck” 10 times & asked “How many rapists must we kill before men stop raping women!” Fuck civility
