Here's a long thread with evidence about why the @RSPOtweets has failed to make any difference with key sustainability promises incl. stopping #deforestation #indigenous #landgrabbing #ecocide #slavery #humanrights abuses for supermarket brands. 1/7 palmoildetectives.com/2021/08/23/why…

Pay attention to the exile of Dr. Stella Nyanzi - she is one of the most important feminists of our time.

She personifies the political power of profanity. The #Ugandan dictator jailed her for it. And now is in exile.

Stella Nyanzi is a revolutionary. I devote much of my chapter on the political importance of profanity to her. Her feminist fight for liberation from the 30+ years of the Museveni dictatorship in Uganda has inspired us all over the world lithub.com/mona-eltahawy-…

One of the weaknesses of collective action in #Ugandan elections is how, reflecting the weakness of political parties, the dynamic MP races overshadow the presidential race and its peculiarities as all parties endorse the result of MP races but contest that of president.
Even now, after a particularly violent pre-election period FDC and even NUP are reporting wins and losses for their MP candidates while attempting to separate this process from that of the election of president as a political reality and statistical question.
FDC has asked how YK Museveni can lose some of his trusted lieutenants but win in the same constituencies with reportedly wide margins. This argument however is not extended to the legality of opposition wins in the same areas.

I devote the bulk of the chapter on Profanity in The Seven Necessary Sins For Women and Girls on Dr. Stella Nyanzi. She is a master at its political use! I explain why in this thread I wrote when she was released in February.

Small Thread| I will miss Nasser Ntege Ssebagala. They don't make them like that anymore. Just this week I was starting to write about the contradiction he embodied in relation to the debate about "academic papers" and qualifications btn supporters of Bobi Wine and YK Museveni
If there are two forces competing for moral and material space in the life of a #Ugandan it is the struggle to "buy a plot of land and build a house" alongside the busy activity involving the acquisition of "more papers", degrees, diplomas and certificates.
Combined as a singular ambition, they dominate entire lifetimes. The pursuit of plots of land and fresh papers for the latest profession ( there are many in my area of study #oil) set the upper limits of success. Then there is the Old School of Seya and the Hustler Club.

As we come to terms with the reality that community spread is probably on-going ( and look to what additional measures the government will announce when @KagutaMuseveni addresses the nation again) here are some thoughts on the health crisis and the economic one ( a thread)
#Ugandan families must be told the reality that this virus, should it spread, will overwhelm the normal healthcare system. This means that health workers and resources they use will be depleted. The only way to stave off such a future is for each family to play its role #COVID19
The government owes a duty to be realistic about the prospect of the next several weeks and frank about it. The temptation to treat the #COVID19 pandemic like a global political beauty pageant by neo-nationalists who play to #Uganda’s reputation will not suffice with the virus

Churches and other places of worship will be closed next week according to proposals for enhanced #COVID19 measures by the #Ugandan government. This follows a cabinet season on Monday. Uganda will hold labor exports to the #UAE and other places (contd)
And will likely announce national closure of all schools ( both day and boarding) following Kenya which has done the same. In addition public meetings will be banned and returning citizens will be put in government quarantine facilities.
A full ban on travel to and from Category A countries like France, Italy and the United States will also be imposed. A partial ban currently exists. It is not yet clear what the ban means for buses and other mass transit options.

Dr. STELLA NYANZI IS FREE!

This is a great day for feminists everywhere, pan-African feminists and feminists around the world! A High Court quashed her conviction and sentencing. She has been in prison for a poem deemed “cyber harassment” about #Ugandan dictator Yoweri Museveni
In August 2019, the feminist scholar, activist and poet was sentenced to 18 months in prison for writing a poem wishing that Museveni’s mother’s birth canal had poisoned him during birth. Read the poem @drstellanyanzi wrote from prison and #BeBoldLikeNyanzi
Dr. Stella Nyanzi is one of my heroes. Her insistence on profanity in the face of patriarchy and dictatorship - the real profanity, the real offense, the real vulgarity - is legendary.

Fuck the patriarchy, everywhere. Fuck dictatorship, everywhere.

Dr. Stella Nyanzi is one of my heroes. I write about her in the chapter on Profanity in my book #7NecessarySins. Thank you @RosebellK for telling me about her collection of poems from prison, where she is serving a sentence for a poem that offended the #Ugandan dictator.
Here is an extract from my chapter on Profanity that features Dr. Stella Nyanzi - a feminist hero for the world lithub.com/mona-eltahawy-… #7NecessarySins
Nyanzi is a force who strategically uses profanity to take aim at patriarchy on behalf of those most harmed by it.

#BREAKING NEWS!!!

@unhcr #UNHCR

According to research by the weekly magazine "@sternde", employees of the @UN refugee agency @Refugees were able to enable #Africans to move to the #West in exchange for #cash payments. Among other things,
the #employees issued false #papers with which the #Africans made it onto the coveted lists of the so-called "resettlement" program.
Several western states, including #Germany, offer refugees who are particularly worthy of #protection a secure future in their country. Above all,
people who are at risk of #disease and #persecution should benefit from this. However, since there are currently only 50,000 to 60,000 such resettlements per year worldwide, the chances of getting one of the places are negligible.

When white men whine and complain, investigations are swift: Does the ABC investigate when right wing extremists and fascist panelists upset viewers? Like Steve Bannon or Blair’s Cottrell? I think I know the answer. about.abc.net.au/statements/abc… #qanda
And when white men whine and complain, ministers are swift to issue statements #qanda #Australia
It’d be brilliant if Paul Fletcher & #Australian govt announced investigation into actual misogynist violence vs women in this country, into racist misogyny that subjects women of colour to multiple forms of violence & oppression, rather than imaginary scenarios of violence vs men

When she shouted “Fuck you. Fuck your. Fuck you!” at her sentencing hearing today, #Ugandan feminist Dr. Stella Nyanzi reminded us: fewer people are as expert as her at disrupting patriarchal authority w/power of her words. She is the star of the Profanity chapter in my new book
Profanity is an essential tool in disrupting patriarchy and its rules. It is the verbal equivalent of civil disobedience. And Stella Nyanzi demolishes “politeness” and “respectability” used as straitjackets against us. She is radically and consciously rude
My new book via @BeaconPressBks begins with profanity. I revel in being deliberately and consciously profane. As I recorded the audiobook, I reveled in every “fuck” I wrote! #WhyISayFuck

Following #WomenWallKerala protest & entry by 2 women into #Sabarimala Hindu temple for 1st time since #Indian Supreme Court lifted ban on women of “menstruating age” I’m writing about time I prayed while menstruating (during Amina Wadud’s historic mixed gender prayer NYC 2005)
Writing about it in chapter on Power in my new book. I am not interested in “Who gave you permission?” I gave myself permission. I took it. Amina Wadud leading mixed-gender Friday prayer was revolutionary and I decided to pray behind her without a headscarf and on my period.
Menstrution remains a taboo and a source of at times deadly consequences of patriarchal notions that it makes us “impure.” I am not “impure.” I am just as I’m supposed to be. I am not interested in arguing with anyone about this. I own my body and I gave myself this permission.
