As I have a bit of DM explosion lately about possibility of various major changes coming out of Tesla soon, here's the general take for everybody interested to consult:
TLDR, something major is brewing ,but I don't know when.

1. back in 2019 they suddenly froze their releases
on 2019.40 branch and only backported essential stuff there - presumably to prevent leakage. Meanwhile updates slowed to a crawl. Eventually 2020.4 was released over a month from previous release and already leaked some info.
now it starts to look like they'll freeze on 2020.4
as is evidenced by 2020.4.10 getting out with some very limited changes (remains to be seen if this is going to be a trend).
We have seen a similar trend play out in early 2019 where 19.4 was released in late Jan and 19.8 was released in March as preparations for hw3 launch were
ongoing at the time (after a bit of an embarrassing leak in 18.48 that already told us everything there was to know about hw3).
So as long as this trend continues you can know there's something major is being worked on.
Now what exactly that is going to be is everybody's guess
and various rumors are circulating elsewhere that I am not going to repeat because I have no way to actually verify them and don't want to attach any extra aura of legitimacy to them by just restating.

It's worth nothing that since Tesla rarely does big change
all in one go, they are bound to release updated firmwares as they add new things on the line. This already happened with the Qi wireless charger and model3 seats and such but they are getting better at filtering the future surprises, yet still not perfect (hence the fw delays)
so now that we know what's going on and I spelled it out there are several possibilities we might see in the near future:
- they'll try to put out a plain 2020.8 or some such release with nothing in it, trying to show this was all incorrect. But there are ways to see through...
- they'll keep doing their current thing and we know they are done when the major things are out and the firmware cadence restores to the levels seen before.

As the things are coming out it might look like "this is it" in several points, only to see even more things come shortly
hence why I think solid cadence of fw releases would be needed to highlight the major changes are finally done with.

having said all that, I cannot make any decisions for you, when you decide to buy from Tesla you are taking your own gamble that nothing you really care about
will be released shortly. Just concentrate on what's on current offer and decide if that's enough for you to want the car. New cars will get better over time and we all know the incremental updates are happening all the time.

If there's show-stopping gaps - sure wait till they
are addressed, but if the product is good otherwise and you just want to keep on top of all changes - know that you would be waiting pretty much indefinitely as Tesla iterates.
since it appears it was not obvious. the "various major changes" above refer to "various major hardware changes".
