There’s a brand of the left that demands relative purity on some economic and environmental issues, but not on civil rights and equality. It’s a consistent pattern that’s often buried within the usage of “the left” and “progressive”.

Combine this attitude with populism, and you get people who want to take on The Establishment*, and are more than willing to make allies with bigots to do so. (And yes Williamson is a bigot.)
