1/8 On Feb 27, @LawSocietyLSO will be hearing two motions brought by members of the #stopSOP slate. The motions can be found here: lawsocietyontario.azureedge.net/media/lso/medi…

2/8 These motions pertain to the Equity & Indigenous Affairs Committee (EIAC) at the @LawSocietyLSO and the Equity Advisory Group (EAG). The EAG is made up of reps from the various equity-seeking groups in the legal profession.

3/8 The role of the EAG is to literally advise the EIAC and, by extension, the @LawSocietyLSO about issues of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

As some of you may be aware, @LawSocietyLSO currently has benchers of a #stopSOP slate who firmly reject #EDI.

4/8 This #stopSOP slate has brought their two motions: (1) to censure members of EAG; and (2) to include themselves on the EAG.

There are a whole host of problems with these motions. A few noted below.

5/8 First, they were made public on short notice.

Second, they are hypocritical. #stopSOP, which claims to be proponents of #freespeech, seeks to censure EAG.

And, third, they want THEIR voices - i.e. those of extremely privileged, white men - to be considered on #EDI issues.

6/8 If you don't believe me, look at the photos below. These are the men who want to decide whether women, BIPOC, queer folk, disabled folk, poor folk experience discrimination, and how (if at all) to address it.

7/8 This is an extremely sad state of affairs at the @LawSocietyLSO. #stopSOP is effectively eviscerating public confidence in the legal profession, and lawyers' own belief in their regulator.

8/8 If you want marginalized communities to continue being represented via EAG, SPEAK OUT.

Tell everyone you know what's happening.

Attend Convocation.

Get your firms to make statements of solidarity re #EDI

Keep constant pressure on the @LawSocietyLSO.

Be an ally in action.
