As of today, this account will no longer be solely focused on football and football writing. There are a number of reasons for this change.
Firstly, what happened to #buryfc back in August continues to have huge ramifications for fans and businesses. I am no different.
I 'upgraded' burymeinexile.com to a business account on WordPress last summer in the hope that I could drive more traffic to my site whilst simultaneously not focusing on #buryfc anymore (there wasn't anything concrete to write about after their expulsion from the EFL).
That has proved to be a mistake. I can no longer justify the cost of maintaining the site on that package. Even now, there's still no certainty as to the future of any club bearing the name 'Bury'. #buryfc #buryafc
There are those who still cling to the idea of salvation of sorts for the original #buryfc, as is their right. I don't share their opinion. I believe the only long-term future is with a majority fan-owned #buryafc. That said, the toxicity around this 'debate' has been god-awful.
Moreover, I can feel my overarching interest in football waning a little as the uncertainty continues into a *seventh month*. It has affected my mental health, and I know I'm sadly far from alone in that.
Even if my personal best-case scenario happens, it's unlikely that a combination of my site and current income streams will be sufficient to justify my current freelancing work. I already feel like an imposter discussing League One and Two with no #buryfc in either anymore
That reality isn't going to go away. I had a choice to make: redouble my copywriting/freelance efforts into more fields or go back to a line of work I'd be miserable in when my son starts school in September.
I had a very helpful discussion with a professional careers coach a fortnight ago, who has helped me to see where I can improve my CV (how it's written), my LinkedIn profile (where most offers of work come through), and the way I market myself.
I could've created a new 'professional' Twitter profile from scratch, but I would lose many of the contacts and followers I have if I'd gone through with my original idea of closing this account for good.
Writing about more than football means unmuting many decent people who use their accounts to talk about lots of other things, including politics. I will shortly be amalgamating my political Twitter profile into this one, free from the restrictions I placed on myself.
I'll totally understand if you wish to unfollow me now. I should reiterate that I'll still be writing about football, it just won't be the sole focus anymore. burymeinexile.com will revert to being a hobby, and I'll be creating a copywriting website bearing my name soon.
I'll still be doing all I can to help with #buryafc, the resurrection of @BuryFCBoysGirls' first team in 2020/2021, and local football in Gloucestershire and south Wales.
