US drone hunting - defeating unmanned aerial systems (UAS) is a big issue, the US has a few programmes chasing options that should be of interest to other users thinking about countering the UAS threat, particularly at the tactical level. A non-exhaustive selection of 5 efforts:
(1) Patriot has been used by several of its global users in a counter-UAS capacity. It is woefully excessive in capability but even moreso in cost. MIM-104F PAC-3 MSE missiles cost as much as USD4.7 million each, which is unsustainable against cheap commercial UAS
To that end a low-cost interceptor is being investigated. @Raytheon Raytheon worked with @RAFAELdefense to make #SkyCeptor, a new development of the Stunner which is the interceptor for Israels David's Sling system.
Initially going for the Polish short range Narew requirement in a boosterless form, it is also to be offered for the emerging US requirement for a low cost interceptor for the Patriot system.
@LockheedMartin has also proactively developed the 'M-SHORAD Future Interceptor'. A small (6ft) hit-to-kill missile, it is not working to a formal requirement but a 'perceived global need for a low cost interceptor' for drone/RAM type threats
(2) IM-SHORAD mounts multiple missiles and associated kit on an A1 Stryker hull to protect "maneuver formations and other tactical echelons from low altitude air attack and surveillance" at the tactical level
Comprises Stryker A1 hull with @LeonardoDRSnews Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform (RIwP) turret mounting 4 Stinger missiles and 2 of AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, XM914 30 mm cannon and M240 7.62 mm MG
FY21 budget funds 72 of them to equip 2nd and 3rd battalion sets (+32 last year for 1st set). Docs state production contract award Jul 2020 for batch 1, with batch 2&3 in Jan 2021. Deliveries run from Jul 2021 to Jan 2023 and have a unit cost of USD7.1 million
This initial capability will be followed by the 'full' M-SHORAD. A Directed Energy version, DE M-SHORAD, will be moved into the M-SHORAD portfolio from FY23, adding CRAM capability. Will be 50 kW laster on Stryker and being competed by Northrop and Raytheon
(3) Howler is a combo of the Coyote loitering munition with the KuRFS (Ku-band Radio Frequency System) radar on an FMTV. Coytote flies out to intercept target with a blast-frag warhead. Has been procured in limited numbers and reached IOC in 2019.
Block 2 and 3 Coyote add further capability, but its stil a fairly expensive way of dealing with UAS. Raytheon said at DSEi that they were looking at adding HEL to Howler to increase flexiblity of effectors and reduce cost per kill.
(4) Raytheon put together HEL armed Polaris MRZR for Army's Maneuver Fires Experiment, standalone system providing 20-30 shots & 4hrs ISR per charge with recharge from any 220v outlet (charge time not specified...) or couple to generator for unlimited usage
(5) Raytheon (again!) have also showed off PHASER high-power microwave effector, which downed 33 droned "two or three at a time" in the same trials the HEL MRZR was used in.
There are many other options and Europe in particular seem to be gravitating towards guns (Skyranger et al) and lasers for hard kill rather than more expensive missiles, but still good to see US pushing the capability area. /end
Edit: I also missed off the Indirect Fire Protection Capability (IFPC) Increment 2-I, which is rapidly fielding an interim capability with the Israeli Iron Dome, networked with the IAMD IBCS (as is Patriot and THAAD) & Sentinel sensor, with a permanent solution in the longer term
