I've just come back from Farnborough where the Home Office and @ADSgroupUK held the Security and Policing Event 2019. Was there to speak about - and see! - counter-#drone tech.
Short thread.
Judging from the number of exhibitors - and the fact they asked me to come - there is *a lot* of interest in counter-#drone tech.
I got to see detection tech - one of the hardest parts of intercepting a #drone is to detect it first.
This system uses infrared to find a drone, and through the up- and downlink, its operator.
These systems work reasonably well - but they may eventually encounter problems if #drones get so autonomous they don't need an uplink or downlink anymore.
But of course, detection is only the first step. For interception, I saw a lot of jammers, such as the below which can either jam wide frequencies or target those frequencies the detection system has identified.
My personal favourite however was slighly lower-tech: net launchers.
This system (either handheld with a 100m range or fixed with a 300m range) brings down rogue #drones by shooting a net at them.
The firm (from the UK) tells me they have sold the handheld system to customer all over, such as the German federal police, or Pentagon security.
What's clever: the net comes with a parachute as to bring #drone and net down together without injuring ppl on the ground.
