It was Spanish flu! Everyone had had it and developed immunities against it until the 1950s, when some other bug came along and [wavey science explanation] and it disappeared!

Anyway, to close the loop, that hey-howdy-doody H1N1 descendant of the Spanish flu basically stuck around and was making everybody sick until 2009, when it got bounced out by a novel version of H1N1, which was our last pandemic before the coronavirus:
