The theme of #IWD2020 is #EachforEqual, because an equal world is an enabled world. Today’s #SundayScience features a few differences in the way men and women are wired. Being aware of these facts may help navigate the differences better, and strive towards #EachforEqual
Disclaimer first: These differences are more averages and typical conditions. They don’t necessarily characterise every man or woman #SundayScience
Genetically, the DNA of men and women is 98.5% identical. The remaining differences give each gender certain unique strengths #SundayScience

February 21st. International Mother Tongue Day. Celebrate your langue maternelle and be proud of being part of such a beautiful culture and heritage #Telugu . A thread of poets/authors who have embellished my mother tongue
Adi Kavi Nannaya. Poet from the 10th century during the Vengi Chalukya times. Known as Shabda Sasanudu ( Law Giver for the Language), since he codified Telugu grammar and started translating the Mahabharata into Telugu.
Thikkana Somayaji, poet laureate during the Kakatiya empire, translated the rest 15 chapters of Mahabharata into Telugu (Nannaya had expired after completing 2.5 chapters)

Regional nationalist interpretations of Indian history are always whack, featuring a top down perspective in that they center what ruling elites did over the social practices of the masses. For ex the trend of highlighting royal inscriptions as proof of a language's supposedly
expansive reach. Then of course modern national identities - which didn't exist back then - are projected onto these markers.

Reminds me of how Govinda Pai wrote Bombay was Kannada speaking "first" coz you have random Kannada inscriptions in some Salcette cave temples lmao.
One of the many, many reasons I love Eaton's legendary work on the Deccan's social history. Even though he focuses on local Sultanates, he highlights (among other things) how vernacular traditions of literary production did thrive in these regions, not just Persian.

A Thread on #ElectoralBonds Investigations. Please stay with me.

There is something useful towards the end of this tweet-trail.

1. Happenings in Maharashtra show why #ElectoralBonds, a to flush secretly funnel unaccounted money into politics, is dangerous for our democracy.
2. The #Electoral Bond Investigation series, hosted by @HuffPostIndia, was based on #CommodorePapers. Transparency activist, Commodore Lokesh Batra (retd) retrieved the docs under the RTI Act.
3. Commodore Batra required nearly 2 years to pull the files out with repeated RTIs and a lot of effort.

Every one of us who values these revelations on the scandalous #ElectoralBonds must thank him.

Modi govt has now diluted the RTI law.

Perhaps the best example of #AmalgamationArchitecture and the cultural inclusiveness of #Hyderabad under the Nizam is #OsmaniaUniversity Arts College founded in 1918. It's the 1st Indian university to have Urdu (a modern language) as medium of instruction (as opposed to Persian).
Under the last Nizam, Osman Ali Pasha, #Hyderabad was thriving as a center of learning, innovation and technological advancement, free from the dark shadow of colonialism that gripped most of the Subcontinent. Hyderabad was quite insulated from India...
...and developed its own culture, architectural styles, cuisine, and most importantly, language. People from India were referred to as Hindustani and so was their language. The language of Hyderabad was Dakhani (of Deccan), which is very distinct from Hindi or Urdu...

Inspired by an article in today’s Eenadu (Telugu), am featuring the benefits of eating on Banana Leaf in this week’s #SundayScience
Banana leaves are packed with plant-based compounds called polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). It contains 3 phenol rings and has very strong antioxidant properties. #SundayScience
EGCG protects our cells from oxidative damage from free radicals. Free radicals are produced by the stressors that our modern life puts on our bodies. #SundayScience

Conventionally, farmers in Punjab & Haryana burnt the crop residue after harvesting paddy (Oct / Nov), to clear their fields for sowing wheat. #SundayScience

Ice Packs or Heat Pads? #SundayScience
Been meaning to restart #SundayScience for a while; eventually hastened by an injury last week. Gave both the topic and the much-needed break on Sunday 😉
Most of us would have used ice packs or heat pads for pain relief. If you already know when to use cold or hot, see you in next week’s #SundayScience. This edition is for the others 😈

#LanguageTrivia: A common catchphrase in English language for speech or text being indecipherable to a person is - "It's all Greek to me!" [1/n]
The genesis of this phrase is often cited as dating back to 1599 when Shakespeare's Casca conspiring against Julius Caesar said, “Those that understood him smiled at one another and shook their heads, but, for mine own part, it was Greek to me.” [2/n]
However, prior to its usage by Shakespeare, English poet Gascoigne, circa 1566, while interpreting an Italian comedy into english wrote, "This geare (talk) is Greeke to me; either it hangs not well together, or I am very dull of understanding: speak plaine, I pray you.” [3/n]

Revisiting this as I revisit #Hyderabad. The level of pervasive influence #Telugu has had on #Dakhni here is absolutely fascinating, with #Dravidian syntax patterns borrowed. Even echo compound formation is from Dravidian, ie /g/ based - local #Urdu sūṭ gīṭ (suits & the like).
An imp distinction to made here - #Urdu infl on local #Telugu is limited to vocab, while #Dakhni actually shows grammatical convergence with Telugu (#Dravidian syntax patterns etc), a much deeper level of infl, giving us many distinctive #Hyderabadi-isms.

Here's an everyday ex of how #Hyderabadi #Urdu has converged with #Telugu grammatical patterns.

The sūṭ gīṭ ex mentioned earlier is another. #Dravidian langs use /g/to form echo pairs, which #Dakhni uses too - Northern Urdu uses /v/, ex khānā vānā.

I legit can't get over how linguistically cool #Telangana #Telugu #Dakhni #Urdu bilingualism in #Hyderabad is. Pretty much everyone brought up there seems to speak both. Code switching galore. Unique too, coz the langs (#Dravidian & #IndoAryan) aren't related & it's a metro city.
The native speaker split is almost even, close to 50 50. What's even cooler (& more exciting) is the strong, pervasive influence #Dravidian #Telugu has had on #IndoAryan #Hyderabad's #Dakhni #Urdu - structural, phonological, syntactical, and lexical, basically, on all levels.
Lots of grammatical, syntactical features in #Hyderabad's #Dakhni #Urdu are basically direct translations of #Dravidian patterns in #Telugu. The local Telugu dialect however, only features loans from Dakhni - clearly a *highly* asymmetrical #languagecontact relationship.
