Deserted galis of Shiv Vihar. Thousands of people, Hindus & Muslims, have abandoned their homes due to the violence. Worst violence & devastation appears to have taken place here at Shiv Vihar.
We could only locate a few Hindu families in Shiv Vihar & most of them were taking shelter in nearby areas. They confirmed that all the Muslim families had abandoned their homes to escape the violence. People were extremely anxious about the future.
Nearly 1000 Muslims who escaped from Shiv Vihar are taking shelter in private homes in Chaman Park. Most fled with only the clothes on their backs, they’ve no idea about condition of home & belongings. Children are traumatised having witnessed houses being burnt, attacks by mobs.
This young man had stitches on the back of his head & his left eye was swollen shut. He was returning from Karawal Nagar to check on the condition of his family on 25th evening when he was caught by 16-17 men who mercilessly beat him after identifying him as a Muslim.
A Madrasa & 2 masjids- Auliya & Madina Masjids in Shiv Vihar area were set on fire, looted & destroyed from inside. A person said the violence was like scenes from a film- gas cylinders would be lit & rolled under cars which would be flung high in the air when the cylinder burst.
Everywhere people said it appeared that outsiders were brought in to do this violence as they could not identify anyone from the locality. Lack of timely response of emergency services- Police & fire was also flagged by people. Sunita &Mithilesh are taking refuge in nearby colony
In Bhajanpura, 3 shops were targeted & burnt. The workers & families, including children, which lived above the shops saved themselves by running to the terrace & jumping into the back lane. All their belongings & means of livelihood have been gutted.
