I started following the Democratic primary for one reason: I wanted to share ideas to tackle the climate crisis.

A year ago today, @JayInslee got into the race for the same reason: to spread climate ideas.

@JayInslee The Inslee team put out brilliant plans to tackle this crisis. They accelerated timelines for cleaning up our grid. They came up with bold ideas for cleaning up buildings. They centered justice in the fight.

In the past year, I've been blessed to make so many friends in this fight, including from the amazing Inslee team: @HendricksB @SamTRicketts @maggiethomas315.

I see why @billmckibben has been promoting climate ideas and unity. That's the goal, folks.

Fellow faculty: Just wanted to share what I've done to help students out with the coronavirus in case it inspires you.
- I'm using Zoom to broadcast my lectures
- I'm no longer taking attendance
- I've cancelled sections
- I'm doing course evals early
- I've sent them info on it
I know that at least one of my students has underlying medical challenges. I imagine some of your students might too. It makes sense to support our students who might be at higher risk by providing flexibility.
In addition, many of our graduate students at UCSB are on strike for a COLA. So I'm also supporting them by cancelling sections. It's a tough time for many right now. We should all aim to do what we can to help others.

New bill text out of Senate committee, American Energy Innovation Act, 2020. I've read it.

Quick assessment? Some good things. Some bad things. Lots missing. Not the speed or scale necessary. But better than nothing...

There is some emphasis on energy efficiency retrofits, which is particularly important now with our carbon intensive electricity grid. Focus on schools, nonprofits, and the federal government. Not enough focus on homes or commercial buildings. Nothing on removing gas (shocker!)
Bizarrely there are incentives for hydro and geothermal and almost nothing for wind and solar.

And of course there's lots of focus on carbon capture.

Very important new report from @mmfa on climate coverage in TV networks.

The big takeaway? Our TV news is still failing to talk about the climate crisis.

@mmfa Less than 1% of TV coverage was on the climate crisis.

That's terrible.
@mmfa And TV networks barely had any women or people of color talk about the climate crisis.

A reminder in case you've forgotten: women are 50% of the population; people of color around 40%.

This is a failure.

One year ago today, I came out to the members of the Vox Culture team who weren’t @jeffur (who’d known for months) or @alex_abads (who got to be the last to know something for once). They greeted me with such warmth and IMMEDIATELY started calling me Emily whenever possible.
Over the next few days, I came out to more and more members of the Vox team, and something I was petrified of became something I knew I could do. We even hatched the idea that became The Catastrophist out of one of those meetings.
We talk a lot about how to support friends and family who are trans, but not nearly as much about how to support colleagues and co-workers. The team at Vox was a model of how to respond with love and support. I would not have gotten through it without them.

#democratic primary: It's 12/1 and just over 2 months to the IA caucuses. So what the heck is going on in this primary that's being conducted in the middle of a constitutional crisis? Well, the bottom line is that young voters are steadier in their preferences than older voters.
Taking @surveyusa polling from Aug-Nov, we see that the 18-34 vote has barely moved for Warren (-1), Pete (+1), Biden (+2) and Harris (-1). For Bernie, there was a big drop of -10 from Aug to Sept, but has since stabilized at 35, highest of any candidate in that demo.
Among 35-49 voters, since Aug, Liz is +2, Pete (0), Bernie (-1), Joe (-5) and Harris (-4). Among 50-64 voters: Warren (+2), Pete (0), Bernie (-1), Biden (-4), Harris (-5). Among 65+: Warren (-13), Pete (+7), Bernie (+2), Joe (-4), Harris (-5).

One year ago today I went home, packed a bag, and left my 4-year relationship. In the months that followed, I spoke to dozens of other heartbroken people. Every relationship is different, but I want to share the best advice I've gathered for making it to the other side [THREAD].
1) It's OK to not be OK: I spent my late teens/early 20s dealing with depression, and reallllllly hate admitting I'm not OK. Wallowing on the couch feels like failure to me.

Rushing to get over something monumentally sad will not serve you well in the long run. Be sad, it's OK.
I don't remember where I screenshotted this from, but here's a great metaphor on the subject. You have to go through the bad stuff to get to the good.

One thing in the way of effective action on our #climate crisis (and our toxics crisis, our biodiversity crisis, our plastics in the ocean crisis, not to mention our violence, war, poverty, racism, & sexism crises) is a terrible misunderstanding of who/what we are.
Many people speak about this as a spiritual/moral crisis and I agree. But, the misunderstanding I want to talk about is at once simpler and more profound.
(Note - when I say 'we' I mean those of us acculturated into the western industrial growth mindset, which in evolutionarily relevant timescales has only been around for a fleeting instant. Humans haven't always thought this way, and not all humans alive today think this way.)
