Fellow faculty: Just wanted to share what I've done to help students out with the coronavirus in case it inspires you.
- I'm using Zoom to broadcast my lectures
- I'm no longer taking attendance
- I've cancelled sections
- I'm doing course evals early
- I've sent them info on it
I know that at least one of my students has underlying medical challenges. I imagine some of your students might too. It makes sense to support our students who might be at higher risk by providing flexibility.
In addition, many of our graduate students at UCSB are on strike for a COLA. So I'm also supporting them by cancelling sections. It's a tough time for many right now. We should all aim to do what we can to help others.
To the people replying with asshole comments: find somewhere else to spread your hate. I'm tired, I have scared students and students on strike. I'm doing my best.

Maybe stop being an asshole on Twitter.

I started following the Democratic primary for one reason: I wanted to share ideas to tackle the climate crisis.

A year ago today, @JayInslee got into the race for the same reason: to spread climate ideas.

@JayInslee The Inslee team put out brilliant plans to tackle this crisis. They accelerated timelines for cleaning up our grid. They came up with bold ideas for cleaning up buildings. They centered justice in the fight.

New bill text out of Senate committee, American Energy Innovation Act, 2020. I've read it.

Quick assessment? Some good things. Some bad things. Lots missing. Not the speed or scale necessary. But better than nothing...

There is some emphasis on energy efficiency retrofits, which is particularly important now with our carbon intensive electricity grid. Focus on schools, nonprofits, and the federal government. Not enough focus on homes or commercial buildings. Nothing on removing gas (shocker!)
Bizarrely there are incentives for hydro and geothermal and almost nothing for wind and solar.

And of course there's lots of focus on carbon capture.

Very important new report from @mmfa on climate coverage in TV networks.

The big takeaway? Our TV news is still failing to talk about the climate crisis.

@mmfa Less than 1% of TV coverage was on the climate crisis.

That's terrible.
@mmfa And TV networks barely had any women or people of color talk about the climate crisis.

A reminder in case you've forgotten: women are 50% of the population; people of color around 40%.

This is a failure.

Think someone is lying to you?

First check to see if they bothered to add any variability whatsoever in the model they are using to supposedly report actual numbers from a complex system.

The mortality rate they want you to report is the - 0 day rate: Today's Confirmed Death total minus Today's Confirmed Case total.

This has not varied outside of 1/10th of 1% in the last 5 prints.
