Hi new followers.

I assume most of you are here for the bread pictures?

While you're here, since I'm seeing a lot of scientists I respect saying - check the credentials of random people tweeting about COVID-19...here are mine:
I'm a former aid worker and emergency manager, and co-led the USG Ebola response in West Africa.

I now research humanitarian aid and pandemic prep - specifically policy & operational elements of how complex systems respond to outbreaks. One such report: cgdev.org/publication/st…
What I'm not: a doctor or a scientist. So I rely on the wisdom of those who are.

But it's important to see pandemic response not just as an issue of science or medicine. It is an inherently multi-disciplinary effort - politics, econ, security, strategy, logistics, culture, etc.
So my work focuses on how all of those dimensions come together - or don't - to form effective responses to outbreaks.

Because pandemic risks aren't just a test of health systems, they are also a test of the political and social systems in which those health systems exist.
So for that stuff, I'm worth listening to.

What's more likely: that Azar is the weak link? Or that Trump is?
One of them is a seasoned health professional who worked on pandemic scares during the Bush administration.

The other doesn't quite understand what a vaccine is.
I'm no fan of Azar on policy matters, but I don't think he's incompetent. And he's had to manage this while sailing into the huge headwinds generated by his boss.

This is INSANE and is a direct outflow of the Trump administration's choice to emphasize #Coronavirus containment rather than mitigation.

Here's how.
A month and a half ago, when Wuhan went up in viral flames, the administration had a choice: focus on keeping the disease out (containment); focus on preparing the US health system for its inevitable arrival (mitigation); or a balanced effort at both.
Any of these options comes with trade-offs.

As @JenniferNuzzo laid out clearly yesterday, there are a finite number of public health workers, and where the government opts to focus their attention is a major strategic choice.

A few assorted #COVID19 thoughts for the day:

First, case-finding numbers in the US are likely to explode. DO NOT PANIC. This is allowing us to see what's already been happening, rather than indicating some new trajectory.
Second, this level of spread is not the Trump administration's fault. It was likely inevitable that we would see community spread in the US (most experts predicted it).

What *is* the administration's fault is that we were blind to it for weeks, and not actively preparing for it.
Third, WASH YOUR HANDS LIKE A MANIAC AND DON'T TOUCH YOUR FACE. Seriously.

And 👏STOP 👏BUYING 👏MASKS.

This is mostly a surface-transmitted virus. You're most likely to get it from touching a commonly-touched surface and then putting your hand to your eyes or mouth.

I'm glad you found what I tweet of value.

It's been a busy couple of days on Twitter at a time of year usually reserved for reflection and slowing down.

You've seen me talk about Nazism and historical interpretation.
As a German and a historian, I'm happy to do this whenever it comes up.

But I like to emphasize the 'how' of doing history and why that leads historians to certain conclusions over simple fact-checking.
A lie that stands on its own can be proven wrong by facts.

A lie that is part of a strategy to undermine accepted beliefs can only really be countered by showing why it's effective and how it fits into a larger story.

That's why I keep talking about methods historians use.

Seeing a lot of people on this website chastising organizers for getting new jobs. I have thoughts, but lemme start here: campaigns are fucking brutal. A LOT of people don’t last past their 1st cycle. My advice is always: if you have more in you, do another campaign. Here’s why:
The shitty old cis/het rich white dudes who still run—and profit heavily off of—this industry, and yes, it’s an industry, are counting on you to get burned out and stop fighting. They’re counting on your heartbreak to sideline you instead of galvanize you.
i've been doing this since 2014. i've worked on 6 campaigns. i'm considered to be a "senior operative" in the game—and it's not because i'm more qualified or whatever, it's because i've managed to stay "in."

the brutality of this industry, these jobs, forces people OUT.

Seeing a lot of "Buttigieg wasn't saying Kennedy was the kind of justice he wanted, he was saying he was a non-partisan/moderate/swing justice" takes out there. But he wasn't. Kennedy was a conservative justice.
The Court's ideological divide is stark, and has been for decades. Kennedy was a member of the Court's conservative wing. He was a less reliable vote for that wing than most, at a time when the other justices were split 4-4, but he was still an ideological conservative.
By the same token, Buttigieg's other example of "justices who think for themselves" is just as bad, but in the other direction—David Souter wasn't a maverick on the Court. He was a liberal. A liberal appointed by a Republican, but still a liberal.

Here's a summary of ProJared's apology.

Starts off by saying he was "lied to" and people circulated "serious accusations" against him that are false (there's photos). Claims he has receipts.

Says he talked to lawyers that advised him he may speak about it.
Says he was "dehumanized" for.... you know, sending his dick to children. Is angry that people didn't listen to him and his fans were silenced by "fear of the internet."
Admits that he did solicit nudes from his fans. Says he wanted a "safe place for those who wished to express themselves" for "adults only" despite the children who have images he did it to them too.

Claims its 100% consensual and he never "pursued anyone" (doesn't matter)
