Many autistic people are highly sensitive to sound. This leads to all sorts of problems in daily life...

...well... not always....

True story, with a fab ending, told by my father in law:

/1
My wife's brother lives in a sheltered home together with several men and women. Most are autistic. One week ago, they were all sitting in the community area together with a care person after dinner. /2
One of the persons living there is an autistic woman, let's call her Carrie.

So Carrie suddenly says: listen! I hear someone yelling, they're saying "help me". The care-giver (let's call him Dave), says: hush! They listen. Dave hears nothing. "I hear nothing" he says. /3
Later, Carrie repeats: "I really hear someone. Help me Help me" they say. Dave again tries to listen but doesn't hear. Carrie insists: I am sure, I really hear it, someone is calling out for help!

(Here's the crucial bit:) Dave believes Carrie.

He goes outside with a torch./4
He walks for a while on the silent street, they live on a farm in a rural area in the outskirts of a small village. Then, faintly and far away, he hears it: Help! /5
Dave runs towards the small outdoor prehistoric museum, nearby. There, at the entrance, is a big pond. Inside, dark and cold, is a man, almost drowed, who could not get himself unto the slippery shore. He'd already thrown his phone in the grass, so people could identify him.../6
Together with the local firefighters they rescue the man.

A neurodiversity, is not necessarily always a disability./7
ps: Here the Dutch local news item reporting on it: rtvdrenthe.nl/nieuws/157597/… /8
