Personal goal: Travel to less touristy places.

Even in popular countries, I want to spend less time in big cities, and more time in small villages where I can meet the locals.

In general... the more different the country, the more transformative the travel experience.
Traveling with locals is the key. I’m planning a trip to rural Panama in April, which is only possible because I have a friend showing me around. The travel experience is much better when a local can take you by the hand, introduce you to their family, and show you their country.
Here are some photos from a 2019 road trip through rural parts of northern Morocco. Once again, traveling with a friend who grew up in Casablanca made this trip possible.

Schools are moving online.

Here are 10 ways online education is better than the traditional model, especially for kids.

1. Ship Fast, Ship Often: Traditional school is too passive. Students learn best when they make things. The more students create, the faster they’ll learn.
2. Wake-up Times.

There is strong evidence that early school start times harm children. Kids don't need to commute so school can start much later. Most people can only focus for 3-5 hours per day. Let’s shorten school times, so kids can be kids instead of sitting in classrooms.
3. More competition.

Students will be able to learn from teachers anywhere in the world. Online schools have lower switching costs, so teachers have to be responsive. As the market size increases, schools will have to compete for students — which will improve education quality.

Easy way to predict if I’ll get along with somebody: A person’s ability to recommend books I like, but haven’t heard of.

My closest friends are obscure book connoisseurs.
If you’re looking for book recommendations, here are my two favorite strategies:

1) Find your favorite book, open the bibliography, and read the most-cited books.

2) Look for books that always come up in conversation with smart people, but are impossible to find in book stores.
Here’s another strategy: Find somebody with great taste and read all their favorite books.

Alan Kay’s reading list is a good place to start.

Hank has dealt with the feds getting called in on his case once before, during the red ice ring investigation. It isn’t always bad having them there - the partnership was what put the red ice ring away in the end...although of course that didn’t stop that surgeon
from being too high on it to operate on Cole.

This is different, though. It doesn’t take someone clued in to the deviancy cases to realize they’re on the brink of something big here, that times are changing at a pace none of them can control - although some of them will sure
as fuck try.

And when tensions are that high, there’s much more room to point fingers and pass blame. The FBI has already made it clear in all their correspondence that they don’t think the DPD has done enough in the wake of the deviancy crisis to control it.

I feel compelled to share a few #travel tips in a thread if anyone's interested✈️

It's worth it to spend an extra $30-$50 to fly an airline you like, treats you with dignity, and earns you miles worth something.

I used to think I was a snob for saying I wouldn't fly WOW as a speaker. It's not. Arriving happy is smart & has high ROI.
I personally prefer @FlyAirNZ & @AlaskaAir. Neither pay me to say that, but I pay to fly on their birdies often. I value legroom, overall experience, and quality of cheese onboard. Ambiance is also worth something when you fly a lot. Both get it.
