Schools are moving online.

Here are 10 ways online education is better than the traditional model, especially for kids.

1. Ship Fast, Ship Often: Traditional school is too passive. Students learn best when they make things. The more students create, the faster they’ll learn.
2. Wake-up Times.

There is strong evidence that early school start times harm children. Kids don't need to commute so school can start much later. Most people can only focus for 3-5 hours per day. Let’s shorten school times, so kids can be kids instead of sitting in classrooms.
3. More competition.

Students will be able to learn from teachers anywhere in the world. Online schools have lower switching costs, so teachers have to be responsive. As the market size increases, schools will have to compete for students — which will improve education quality.
4. Easy Switching.

Teachers can keep class fresh by changing the activity every 20 minutes. Online platforms make it easy to switch up the format of the class, so students can jump between lectures, small group discussions, and solo creative work time.

5. Group projects.

Classrooms make group work difficult, by design. The tools for collaborative online creativity already exist — Google Docs, Figma, Notion — and young people have an intuitive understanding of them. Teachers should take advantage of these powerful tools.
6. School will reflect the future of work.

Remote work is on the rise. The technology is already available for kids to work asynchronously and tackle projects with people around the world, just like remote work. Video chat is natural for kids because they use to talk to friends.
7. Everybody can participate.

When I was a kid, I always got in trouble for talking. Now that I'm a teacher, I encourage it. Live chats bring the community to life. They’re a place for students to talk about lectures and work through ideas together.

8. Better pre-recorded lectures.

Lectures will be so much better. Due to the scale of online education, teachers can pour investments into short, TV-quality lectures — with graphics and animations that bring ideas to life.

9. Local homeschools.

Some parents will run their own homeschools. Others will send their kids to local homeschools, where teams of parents educate their children together. All of them will benefit from all the online platforms like Youtube.

10. Better teachers.

Online education gives teachers leverage on their ideas. By publishing their ideas on the Internet, they can teach more people in a single afternoon than they would have been able to in a lifetime. With more reach and better pay, teacher quality will rise.
I'm working on a project to bring these ideas to life.

It's designed for kids who want to be creative, make friends from around the world, and become citizens of the Internet.
