Easy way to predict if I’ll get along with somebody: A person’s ability to recommend books I like, but haven’t heard of.

My closest friends are obscure book connoisseurs.
If you’re looking for book recommendations, here are my two favorite strategies:

1) Find your favorite book, open the bibliography, and read the most-cited books.

2) Look for books that always come up in conversation with smart people, but are impossible to find in book stores.
Here’s another strategy: Find somebody with great taste and read all their favorite books.

If you want to improve your writing, start by becoming a better note-taker.

Here are 10 ways to do that:

1. Save only the best notes: Don't hoard information. Save your top 5-10% of ideas only. That way, you can trust that everything in your note-taking system is high-quality.
2. Create evergreen notes.

Like a good investment, the benefits of your note-taking system should compound in value. Save ideas that will stay relevant for many years. Read the classics, skip the news. Note-by-note, brick-by-brick you’ll build an intellectual Coliseum.
3. Publish regularly.

Writing more is the fastest way to improve your note-taking system. Without the pressure to produce, your system will become messy. The pressure to produce will turn your note-taking system into an extension of your mind.

My Twitter account is more valuable than my college diploma.

These are the best things I've learned about using this wonderful platform:

1. If you want to build an audience, help people. Teach them and entertain them. Share what you learn and make your followers smarter.
2. Who should you follow?

When you follow somebody, you're giving them permission to brainwash you with their ideas. Skip Twitter's recommendations. Follow interesting people instead of politicians, publications, or celebrities. If somebody is bothering you, unfollow them.
3. How can you build your audience?

Tweet consistently, find your niche, and write the best reply to viral tweets. Rely on big nodes in the network for distribution by writing what they'll re-tweet. You can tag big names, but being spammy will destroy your credibility.

If you want to start a business, writing online is the best way to start.

Here are 10 reasons why:

1. Writing online makes marketing easier. The people who read your writing now will become your customers in the future. An audience will speed up your path to profitability.
2. Writing online is a process of discovery.

Writing will help you crystalize your ideas. You don't just write to share what you think. You write to discover what you think. Start writing before you know exactly what you're going to write about.
3. Writing online will help you find business partners.

The Internet is a magnet for like-minded people. Building anything is easier when you team up with people who complement your weaknesses but share your values. Writing online is the most efficient way to find co-founders.

1/ Let's talk about getting paid for writing.

I've been making money off stringing words together since I was 21 and I'm happy to talk about my experiences in this area.

If you too would like to get paid for writing, this thread might be helpful.
2/ I'm primarily a creative fiction writer and an occasional columnist plus (if you follow me here on Twitter) you can see that I'm a rambling essayist. All of these things have made me money over the years.

The bulk of my passive revenue comes from self-published fiction.
3/ I don't see it as my PRIMARY career because it's more of a hobby or a lifelong passion that I would do whether I get paid or not, but my publishing/writing biz pays all my bills at this point and makes corporate work optional for me.
