Whatever happens from here, I’ll always be grateful to Bernie for being the only candidate with a policy platform that includes the right to vote for incarcerated ppl.

I spend a lot of time w/folks in prison & know how much this means to them. It’s made them feel less invisible.
If you’re unfamiliar, the vast majority of people in prison are counted by the census as residents of the place where they are incarcerated, but they don’t have the opportunity to vote there. Their bodies are counted, their voices are not.

This is not to say every incarcerated person is a Bernie supporter necessarily, incarcerated ppl, like everyone else, have a complex range of views that shape their politics & beliefs.

Still, I haven’t met a single incarcerated person who doesn’t deeply appreciate his position.

From a public health perspective it certainly seems like pausing all prison visits is the right thing to do.

Still, these visits are often the only connection incarcerated ppl have to the outside & it's the thing that keeps them going. I'm worried about the psychological impact.
With in-person visits being cancelled, all phone calls for people in jail and prison should be free. They should always be free, but especially now.
Video calls should also be made free and accessible to incarcerated people. They are not substitutes for the real thing, and should not be used as such once the pandemic has passed, but for now it's the least these prisons can do.

So many authors have spent years working on book projects that are coming out in what is now a really uncertain time. Your support can make a huge difference.

A reminder that if public schools shut down, millions of children will lose their access to some of the only meals they receive each day.

Food banks will become more important, and I've learned the best way to help is not to donate your spare canned goods, it's to donate money.

To celebrate the impending 10th anniversary of @GamesDoneQuick , I've taken the liberty of compiling a list of 100 of the best runs showcased throughout its history. I'll be adding one run to this thread every day until the 1st of January, which marks ten years to the day.
Some caveats:
* No, these aren't literally the best 100 runs. How do you even measure that? But they're all runs I think leave their impact on the event's history.
* Obviously I haven't picked any of my own runs - but there are some I commentated on, and felt privileged to do so.
* I've got at least one run in here from all 20 live events to date - CGDQ, all 9 editions of AGDQ and SGDQ, and last year's GDQx. No JRDQ or HRDQ, sorry!

Also I won't be adding anything from the upcoming GDQx, which is this weekend, but you obviously should watch that anyway!

I hear some people say we need to be outraged every day, but working in immigration or writing about immigration, that is every hour, every day. Being constantly angry and outraged isn’t sustainable.
It’s toxic, it’s unhealthy, it’s exhausting. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out a place that can work for me, where I can be an effective advocate but still not wear myself out.
I’m grateful to have a job where I’m offered a good amount of PTO, but I’m bad—really bad—at taking it.

When I do, I try to disconnect but it’s hard. My mind always wanders back to what’s happening, or could be happening. That’s another thing I’m trying to figure out.

Recommended for anyone interested in UGFs and clandestine munitions factories: the Ayalon Institute Museum In Rehovot, Israel. Here’s the kibbutz laundry, the washing machine inside, and the secret entrance underneath it.
The laundry and bakery sat above the UGF, disguising the ventilation systems and covering the noise and smell of a bullet factory about 30 feet below them.

To start: KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO

Different artists have different needs. Some artists thrive on harsh criticism and direct feedback. Andre’s path for getting better might only require helping him identify problems in his work and eliminating them.
The more time you spend pointing out where things on a page aren't working, the quicker he'll progress. Mentoring Andre, you can be a diagnostician! Just start identifying symptoms & prescribing treatments.

We've seen the troubling photo of a young child crawling in the middle of the road and while your gut reaction may be to shame the caretakers we ask that you fight that impulse with all your being. If you think this kind of thing could not happen in your home, you are mistaken.
We spend a lot of time on here encouraging people to be more mindful of the safety of themselves and their families. That's because children end up in dangerous situations in every kind of household, with parents from every socioeconomic background, all. the. time.
If there's one thing you should take away from that photo it's that this is the time to evaluate your own home and ask yourself how you could make it safer.
