Alright fine, I have one thing to say. (re: Warren)

I'm not, by nature, a very optimistic person. My writing has occasionally been referred to as "introspective pessimism." Yep, that checks out. That's me.

I don't have a lot of faith that American government has the capacity to confront the major social problems it faces -- especially climate change.

The window for fighting climate change probably closed with Bush v Gore. I generally think we're long past out-of-time.

@ewarren's candidacy gave me an inkling of hope.

She displayed insight and class, boldness and nuance. She combined populist ideals with technocratic details.

Her candidacy was an existential threat to people who ought to feel existentially threatened.

Warren left me thinking that maybe, just maybe, we could rebuild regulatory capacity, push bold solutions, and regain some of the lost ground that desperately needs to be covered.

She showed such a clear understanding of all the levers that would need to be pulled.

I don't honestly believe that either of the remaining candidates can meet the challenge of repairing and reforming American government. I'm sorry, but I don't.

One would be a caretaker President assuring us that the old status quo was working just fine. (It wasn't.)

The other offers progressive solutions, but his theory of change is to make demands and insist that others bend to meet him. I don't believe that will work.

So I'm left tonight with less hope. That's disappointing but familiar territory.

I'm thankful to Elizabeth Warren for the campaign she ran. I'm thankful to her campaigners for giving me an inkling.

And I'm regretful that we, as a party, did not take this opportunity.

But there's a line in Warren's speech today that stands out:
"Choose to fight only righteous fights, because then when things get tough — and they will — you will know that there is only one option ahead of you: Nevertheless, you must persist."

This was a righteous fight. There will be others.

I'm off to drink with IRL friends now.

It's going to be a long campaign, and it's still essential that a Democrat beat Donald Trump in November. I'll be there for that fight with you all.

But we'll have a worse government when we win.

Worse, I fear, than we require.

She would have made a magnificent President.
