OK I've been doing super boring video edits all day on five hours of sleep and now I don't think I can wring enough functionality out of my brain to make any worthwhile progress on any of my other projects, soooooooooooo bad movie recs? -R

now I'll admit I don't know much about anime light but this opening montage just doesn't feel right

for instance, I can't really see this guy getting horny for anyone other than himself

so light is an unpopular horny goober raging against the system who's theoretically booksmart but not actually smart enough to hide his homework-selling operation? Knowing no better, I will of course implicitly trust that this is true to the source material

and now he's cartoonishly shrieking and hiding under a desk, that's neat. he definitely seems like the calculated chessmaster I've seen in the amvs

all nonsense aside, this movie LOOKS pretty good effects and cinematography-wise

okay and I kinda respect that light's reaction to ryuk's "give into the dark side, write his name, kill him~" speech is just "I don't have a pen. …Good thing YOU had a pen."

so this light is a Hurting Sadboy cuz his mother died in a hit-and-run and his cop dad didn't put away the guy who did it. good way to humanize someone and justify their distrust of the justice system, but not great to give a freudian motive to a magnificent chessmaster bastard

this kid is honestly a good actor, too bad this character is……… something else

this movie took a fuckin hard swerve into the "btw L is one of several magic supersoldier children conditioned in a brainwashing vault to become Ultimate Detectives" zone

I kinda like that L is basically a neurotic lost puppy without watari around reminding him to sleep n shit but I get the feeeeeeeeling this isn't very accurate to the source

I do also like the little hints that watari's doing some fighting from the inside - the callback to "sleep is very important", murmuring the lullaby, etc - but I am upset that L hasn't figured out why Light took Watari, his surrogate father who can hella find his name

all the smart people in this movie are so dumb

L is the only character I even slightly care about at this point but why is he so bad at driving

cool that didn't wrap anything up but it also didn't particularly open itself up for a sequel so it just kind of ended badly

on its own, this movie is… functional, if boring and confusing. But I get the feeling if I were more familiar with the show I would HATE this with a burning passion
