Expired hand sanitizer:

Hand sanitizer expiration dates are based on when the solution drops below 90% of listed ingredients. Usually that's 2-3 years on the shelf.

Sanitizer mostly starts at 60% alcohol which is pretty much the minimum effective at killing anything.
So at the expiration date you're at 53% alcohol. Not enough to be effective at killing things.

It is, of course, better than nothing if you don't have anything else.

Recommendation is about 1 year once purchased once you break the seal (if still before expiration)

This, of course, is not to suggest that sanitizer is a replacement for washing hands. Washing hands kills and gets rid of WAY more things than sanitizer. But, sanitizer is effective when sinks are far

Norovirus, for instance, can't be killed with alcohol (it's capsid enclosed).
