So here's the latest from @lapublichealth about #coronavirus #COVID2019 in L.A. County: There have been two new, confirmed cases. That brings the total to 16 countywide @kcrw #GreaterLA
For those two new cases: one is known travel to Japan. The cause of the other case is still unknown. That means L.A. County could've had its first case of community transmission @kcrw #COVID2019 #coronavirus
There are also new guidelines for the elderly, people with compromised immune systems and pregnant women. @lapublichealth is recommending those folks practice "social distancing" AKA staying away from other people, especially in large crowds at schools, work or events @kcrw

The correct framing on #coronavirus #COVIDー19 risks, and why the death rate of the virus is irrelevant:
Death is the most emotional subject we as humans must deal with. And we all must deal with it. But there is no truly rational way to deal with death. There are ways one could argue make life while living more enjoyable, but rationality is out of the question.
So, one of the primary ways we as humans deal with death is to create a heuristic about death. We think of deaths as normal or tragic. A 95-year-old passing away in their sleep surrounded by loved ones? We have a “celebration of life” rather than a grim funeral.

1. Public Health and your personal health are not the same thing. The health of individuals and the health of the population are interdependent, but the strategies are different. The response to coronavirus (covid-19) in King County is a public health response.
The goal is to protect the community as a whole. Your role as an individual is to do your small part to cooperate in the larger project, for the good of the whole community. Think of it as part of your civic duty. A war effort without the war.

A thread on why I am not panicking about #Coronavirus #COVID-19.
In 2003, the world experienced an outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). I was in med school. Initially, the illness seemed to be linked with travel to China, but the Chinese government was not saying anything about it.
The cause of SARS was completely unknown, and it was five months between the illness first appearing and the World Health Organization (WHO) becoming significantly involved, alerting public health authorities around the world.

First check to see if they bothered to add any variability whatsoever in the model they are using to supposedly report actual numbers from a complex system.

The mortality rate they want you to report is the - 0 day rate: Today's Confirmed Death total minus Today's Confirmed Case total.

This has not varied outside of 1/10th of 1% in the last 5 prints.

But even a minor adjustment of a few days in the mortality rate paints an entirely different picture
