Friends, if this is your first time working remotely, here’s some helpful tips (thread)
Schedule your breaks and walk around outside if you can. It’s very easy to work past your usual hours
Designate certain parts of your house for work and work only. Don’t work in your relaxation areas of you can
Develop a ritual for the start and end of your work day. It can be changing your clothes, moving to a different room, or sitting down on the couch! Something that signifies to your brain you’ve changed state
Go outside and talk to people if you can. We need human contact and if you’re not used to being remote, it can get very isolating very quickly
Start writing things down! You’re no longer able to have hallway conversations and decide on the fly what to do. Start documenting things and send them to people to read on their own time. Follow up the next day
Exercise! I go to the gym to socialize and move after being home all day. It also helps keep you on schedule and reduces stress
Schedule video calls with people to socialize or talk through issues. If you aren’t used to async conversations, it can lead to misunderstandings quickly. A quick video call usually clears things up
I’ll keep posting these as I think of them! Hope this helps!
Oh! Have conversations in public slack channels so decisions are still made in the open
I also like having “coffee talk” which is scheduled social time! Seems weird at first, but isn’t that what you do first thing in the morning anyways?
If you and your spouse are both home (!) I recommend having separate working areas if possible. I generally take the office and my husband takes the dining room table. No expectation to have lunch together
