Always design software with abusive exes in mind
The upsetting thing about this is Jessica has been dealing with this for A MONTH and Google Support says it’s a bug but also working as intended

Your software shouldn’t work to enable people to harass others!
This is a person who is actively being harassed by a flaw in your software. It’s your responsibility to fix it
This blew up unexpectedly. Please believe women/nb/trans/POC when they say something is a problem.

Making things safer for the most vulnerable people on your platform makes it better for everyone (eg better permissions systems = better enterprise software = more $$)

Yesterday on BART I heard one Asian lady engineer give negotiation advice to her friend that was so egregiously wrong, I almost committed a SF atrocity and talked to them

But my stop was next so, in true SF fashion, here’s a tweet thread /1
The first Asian woman seemed to be interviewing for her first engineering job and didn’t know how to negotiate. She wanted $10k more

Her friend proceeded to talk her out of it because “they spend so much time and money to interview YOU there isn’t much left” /2
She then said it would be better if her friend DIDNT negotiate because she would have more leverage at her first review - 6 months or a year down the road - because of all the hard work she would have to show /3

I’ve explained this to two white men tonight, which warrants a thread on the topic:

Well-meaning white people, the inclusion of marginalized voices (LGBT, POC, etc) does NOT mean we are excluding you 1/?
When a person is used to a world where everything is made for them, being asked to make space for others is threatening

It can be scary because for the first time in your life, someone is asking you to stretch and consider *you are part of the problem* 2/?
And that’s rough, no one wants to believe they are a bad person. But there are systems in place that put marginalized people in danger and reward whiteness

Before we start, remember this as you read. Just because YOU think the answer to any of these issues is clear-cut, it doesn't mean that issue is not political.

There are people who take the OPPOSITE position with just as much conviction, and they think it's clear-cut too.
Also - as an engineer, a developer or designer - if you choose to ignore the political and societal implications of your #technology, YOU HAVE MADE A POLITICAL CHOICE.

Heard (again) that #design and #ux is somehow incompatible with #agile (which to most, means #scrum).

..that ppl can’t always jam their work into little increments

..that MVPs suck because they’re never improved

..that work can’t always be boiled down into a “ticket” 1/n
...that #design is more than screens...a more holistic view is needed

...that an output fixation is killing products

...that quality shouldn’t be sacrificed just to get stuff out the door

...that craft should be respected

...that #ux debt sucks 2/n
...and you know what? Those exact same things are muttered by engineers/QA all the time.

They have nothing to do with #agile, but everything to do with paint-by-numbers approaches to “delivery”, org silos, and overly simplistic “#design then build” models. 3/n
