Who are harassers? It’s not people in basements, it’s people like us who are doing social sanctions (shame)
We think “an eye for an eye” for social blunders is justifies online harassment
This is how people justify death and rape threats - they honestly believe they are doing good against someone who “deserves” it

People often think they are the "good actors" in social sanctions. People are so desensitized to this kind of behavior that no one does anything (bystander effect)

That's why our team focuses on disrupting destructive behavior and encouraging good online citizenship
Bystander intervention DOES work! How can you introduce bystander intervention on your service when something bad is happening?
How do you surface all the social sanctions (or harassment, depending on how you look at it) so people feel they've been heard without piling on?
How do we give offenders the ability to apologize and move on?
Use deescalating language, shared experiences, create space to advocate for justice without resorting to abuse can be ways we can move forward
When offenders feel they were treated fairly they are less likely to act out again
