Unmasking susceptibility to pneumonia has positive evolutionary qualities for people living in dense population zones: strong inherent traits to defeat pneumonia are selected via Darwin’s “survival-of the-fittest” mechanism.
Humans are only vertebrates (along with a tree shrew) that does not produce Vitamin C in their bodies; obviously a genetic mutation. Since generous Vitamin C intake is associated with survival from pneumonia, it appears that COVID-19 might be unmasking this “natural” deficit.
It is interesting to note that the early COVID-19 epidemic is afflicting dense populations in northern climes, where there is reduced accessibility to natural fruits (Vitamin C).
I guess that two factors which skew toward less affliction from the deadly consequences of COVID-19 infection are living in reduced population zones and eating more fruit.
