Also, since nobody asked, here are some tips I would offer to folks doing academic distancing plans: 1. Create a DAY ONE plan to share with faculty; i.e. "Here's what you can do on day one." I would consider having faculty send students a calm, reassuring video.
2. I would provide faculty with as much boilerplate language as possible. Give them language for an email to students about how to access the LMS. Give them boilerplate language for an email about how to access tech tools. etc. Make faculty lives easier.
3. What would a faculty-to-faculty discussion space look like? Given that you're likely to not have enough IDs and tech support for the whole faculty, give them a place where they can EASILY ask each other for help. A Google Group might even suffice.
4. Give faculty actual demos/examples. IOW, do some lesson planning FOR faculty. Show them what a Kaltura video with an embedded quiz looks like by creating one that doubles as a teaching (them) tool.
5. To the extent possible, when giving written instructions, use screenshots. Faculty love screenshots so they can look at their screens and see that they are doing it right.
also, there are lots of other great threads #onhere with tips. If you are using Zoom (or any other videoconferencing system) for synchronous teaching/learning, this thread from @RyanStraight is *outstanding*
6. Oh, one more (for now) thing... when working with anxious faculty, ixnay on the technical language. Words like "synchronous" and "asynchronous" may seem like perfectly obvious terms to you, but they are jargon-y to newbie distance ed. folks.
7. OHHH... also, one consistent research finding. Self-regulated learning (SRL) is highly predictive of success in distance ed. Help faculty help students be self-regulated learners. Here's a great review of the research on SRL and distance ed. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Adding to this thread to say that much like your Twitter network is not representative of the voting population, professors on Twitter are NOT AT ALL representative of the population of instructors having to move online. 90%+ are not extremely online like you.
