What is the Buddhist perspective on health and safety? A thread.🍎
Buddhism is reason. It teaches that faith is not relying on an external entity to protect us.
Rather, the daily Buddhist practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, draws forth our inherent potential, or Buddha nature, to take action that creates value.🌱
“Buddhism is ultimately a teaching about human life and conduct. In that sense, our Buddhist practice is expressed in our words and actions.” - Daisaku Ikeda
Nichiren Daishonin, the 13th-century Buddhist reformer, shared practical advice to fellow Buddhist practitioners that were in difficult situations. Shijo Kingo who was known for having a hot temper, was once the target of fellow samurai.⚔️
Nichiren Daishonin encouraged him to be careful. Specifically, to ride a sturdy horse so he wouldn’t have to walk home late at night and stay home with his wife rather than going out.
“Safety is the foundation for happiness. Carelessness is our greatest enemy.” - Daisaku Ikeda
Caring for our safety and health is an expression of our Buddhist practice to treasure life. 🙏
Not only did Shijo King survive, but he won over his fellow samurai through his behavior as a human being.
Being careful—washing our hands, staying home when we feel sick, eating wisely—are all expressions of deep Buddhist faith. 💯 #buddhism #health
