Let me trouble you. 
When we were younger, we were taught that scripture contained everything we needed to know about God. It became a formular of sorts. We input the right scripture and just the right amount of faith to get what we want. If we don't get it, then we are the problem, not God.
Through scripture we were told we could also predict God's actions.
As we developed personal relationships with God, it became clearer that just like you cannot predict an ocean by studying a cup of water or the wind, you can't predict God by boxing him into a small sample of his word.
We discovered that God was an independent sovereign being who takes decisions and responds to context and his own desires.
We learnt we couldn't box God.
We learnt we have a lot more responsibility for shaping our lives than we thought, instead of just waiting for God to "take control".
This has led to many a disappointment and disillusionment. Man seeking to control God. What a myth.
Here's a "formula" Christians have created to ameliorate the pain of unanswered prayer: "God will not do anything man ought to do."
