@MaxBoot @mmfa One quibble: Tucker Carlson has not been "an outlier of sanity on this subject." He is telling his viewers they should worry about coronavirus -- but has also spread xenophobic conspiracy theories about it being designed in a Chinese lab and blamed "diversity" for its spread.

It's a "pick your poison" situation -- Carlson is less willing to carry water for Trump than some Fox hosts, but he's also more dedicated to xenophobia.

Solidarity re: keeping the economy shut down to limit mass casualties is already breaking down, with WSJ edit page calling for "a pandemic strategy that is more economically and socially sustainable than the current national lockdown." This is... not good. wsj.com/articles/rethi…
Main problem of course is that this presumes such a strategy actually exists.

Conservative leaders spent decades driving their supporters to reject mainstream reporting and instead patronize right-wing media outlets. When those supporters needed life-or-death information about a pandemic, they got propaganda instead.
"It's the dishonest left wing news media's fault that Fox was telling everyone coronavirus was just like the flu" is apparently the takes you get from the party of personal responsibility.

Guy at BSNL office was worried over his personal issues, started talking to me on his own, about lay offs, privatization, future of LIC, a lot. Said govt unable to control but later said, 'look at Pakistan, they've to mortgage all, even roads, we're much better' #Media #Narrative
He was explaining to me that in India, we're yet to sell railways but in Pakistan even 'roads sold' to keep the country's economy afloat'. Must have picked up from channels. So this comparison always makes people content, 'unse behtar hain', without stepping foot out of India.
This is the super narrative--comparison has to be with Pakistan, look at how others have sunk & we are still not doing badly. Even within locality it happens, people are sometimes more jealous about neighbour's accomplishment. So playing on these emotions. Truly amazing.

process by which a story gets into print at these papers- the scrupulous vetting & editorial process, esp in the Trump Era, where any mistake is a disaster. And I talk about accountability- about what happens at a major outlet when something intentionally gets screwed up, like
the Rolling Stone UVA rape story. About how careers are ended. And I talk about incentives & how looking at people's incentives (combined w their constraints) are a good way at judging reliability. Journalists have incentives to get a hot story, but they have major constraints-
