Determining the east-west direction according to kaatyaayana shulba sutram. As we know the sun rises in the east is not really true except for two days in a year. The shulba sutra gives a simple method to determine it. Method is simple/inexpensive and can be done anywhere +
Take a chart paper and draw a circle with a pencil. Radius of the circle is twice the length of the pencil, Place the pencil in the center of the chart and keep the chart paper in morning sun +
The shadow of the pencil will be outside and as the sun moves, it will enter the circle and soon be subsumed by it. When the tip of the shadow intersects the circle, mark that point
Soon the shadow will become shorter and will change direction and start moving towards the circle and will leave the circle in the evening. Again mark the intersection point
Joining these two points will give the east-west line
