Instead of asking questions of the experts at this Oversight hearing on coronavirus, Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.) is complaining about what he calls the "politicization" of the crisis. The ranking member, Rep. Jim Jordan, (R.-Ohio) has left the hearing. No questions from him.
Rep. Green ended his questionless rant by quoting Obama appointee and former CDC director "Tom Friedman" He meant Tom Frieden.
Rep. Grothman (R-Wis.) tried to get Fauci to compare annual US flu deaths to the projected number of deaths from coronavirus. Sounded like Grothman thought there would be fewer coronavirus deaths. Fauci eventually said coronavirus could kill "many millions" of Americans.
Don't think a bowtie is a great call for venue. Does he have a wedding later?
Prodded by GOP committee members who keep making comparisons to the seasonal flu, Fauci says "the flu has a mortality rate of .1 percent. This has a mortality rate of 10 times that."
Maloney says the committee is now hearing that the meeting the witnesses have to leave to go to "is not an emergency" but says White House staff has provided inconsistent info on this. "There seems to be a great deal of confusion and a lack of coordination," Maloney says.
A senior Democratic Oversight Committee aide says that HHS told the committee this morning about the supposed "emergency" meeting at the White House that required all the witnesses to leave early. The witnesses later clarified that it was not an emergency meeting.
