In general, v impressed with actions, communication from #NYS and #NYC. Things are moving quickly. Hopefully there will be a change today. But I think #NYC is making a big mistake resisting canceling big public events like St Patrick's Day parade. I'm no expert. But the ...
2/ experts are speaking very clearly about this. Big public events, even outdoors, especially near a hotspot are a bad idea. There's peer-reviewed research specifically about parades as major vectors of contagion during epidemics like #COVID19.
3/ I know #NYC is balancing many critical equities. The options are all bad. But this seems like a big mistake with potentially grave consequences.

2/ We need to move past the impossible binary btw slowing disease spread and providing social services for at need kids and move on to how you ramp down or close the schools while providing critical support for at need kids. Nor is it just at need. It’s what to do for ...
3/ parents of critical workers who can’t leave kids at home. The answer may be keeping schools open on a limited basis. Even that will reduce density within the schools which is a plus in itself. It is important to remember the kids themselves are going to be okay.

Here's a different look at the data: growing cumulative number and daily number.
2/ Since I posted these charts the cumulative number has spiked up to just under 14k. Just what constitutes a day here, which day they’re attributed to, can be a little messy given the unevenness of reporting. But broadly speaking, we can see the acceleration continues.

For other journos on this. WH/Pence/Taskforce keeps sending out press releases ‘announcing’ migration strategies in hotspot communities. But as far as I can tell in each case they’re simply ‘announcing’ things the local officials have already done.
2/ In the case of one that just went out about New Rochelle it seems like it’s not even that, just some some suggestions mainly abt things like hand washing, telecommuting. For others reporting on this, is this your impressions? I can’t see anything new or actually announced.
3/ Migration/mitigation. Autocorrect.

A few thoughts on the just passed HR 1044.1
1st, congratulations to the many people who have been working on this bill for more than a decade. While passing in 1 house is great, those of us who remember the Senate passing comprehensive immigration reform in 2013 know that even a bill passing by a wide margin isn't enough.2
Still, it's a huge milestone and should be celebrated. 3

1) There’s a lot of BS about @nntaleb’s Black Swan, antifragility & skin in da game. Let’s take the gloves off and get into trouble.
2) When the Swan flew out, it was immediately butchered by imbeciles not understanding that you can’t predict the unpredictable.

That is the point – and an IQ filter NNT himself proly did not expect.
3) In any complex domain – life! – the Blackest Swan is always skulking around the corner. You know it’s coming, but you don’t know what where when. You can't tame what you've never even conceived of.

Today I'm going to tweet a bit on #mypainday about my experience with chronic pain, bc I think it can be hard to understand if you don't have it.

I'll add some drawings from my pain sketchbook too. Because pictures! ✏ A colour pencil drawing on plain paper, of a fallen field maple leaf with a grey pigeon feather threaded through it in two places, via holes on either side of the midvein. The leaf is yellow, brown, and green, in a state of partial decay.
I have chronic pain because I smooshed 2 arts of my spine - the lumbar part at the bottom, and the cervical part at the top (my neck). This affects the spinal nerves that control my legs + foot, & arms + hands. So those are the parts that hurt.
I manage my pain with the smallest amount of medication that is still effective on any given day, physio exercises, psychological exercises, & a supportive partner #mypainday
