Donald Trump is an authoritarian and authoritarians are inherently so insecure they can’t organize collective action, reject experts out of fear, and work hardest to cover up their mistakes.

For all of these reasons, a pandemic is a nightmare scenario.

Instead of actually addressing the problem of coronavirus, Trump will sabotage all efforts, spend his energy complaining about media coverage, then scapegoat traitors, push conspiracy theories, and vilify vulnerable populations. If it gets really bad, he’ll seize power.
This is all really, really predictable. History tells us exactly how thus will play out because authoritarians and “strongmen” are all the same. They’re so insecure and weak and terrified that they can’t govern and can only blame innocents and lash out.

All right. We need to talk about a couple of vitally important things happening in the background that aren't quite in focus just yet but are going to define the coming days.

White identity evangelicalism that holds Trump as a messiah and Trump's authoritarian nature.

Already we're seeing Trump and Republicans refer to a "foreign virus" and in the case of Jerry Falwell Jr. an outrageous claim that coronavirus is a North Korean bioweapon. What's happening is an evolution that is going to continue growing and growing for the next few months.

I grew up in the evangelical community, this exact cult I'm about to speak about. I've come to refer to it as the Cult of the Shining City for its marriage of white identity politics and dangerous national myth. It's a merging many of us have felt but have not understood.

This entire crisis, the pandemic, the dysfunctional executive response, Trump’s blatant and dangerous incompetence, is the result of generation’s my worth of manipulation and control that has hidden one disastrous mistake after another beneath the veneer of American myth.
American leaders have conquered and subjugated large swathes of the world while constructing an economy that favors the wealthy and powerful to the detriment of the people. This system is inhumane and has cleared the way for a fraud like Trump and a deadly pandemic.

If you’re a journalist reading this, if you have access to members of the Trump Administration, if you’re at an event where Trump speaks, get them on the record that they’re dedicated to holding elections.

This is absolutely vital and has to start right this second.
Obviously Trump lies, but we need to get out in front of any move to cancel the elections. The moment he feels like momentum is against him it will creep in. It’ll be instinctive for him. We have to work to keep this thing from spiraling because once it starts it’ll move fast.
Trump is already bragging about his emergency powers, talking about how people don’t understand how broad they are. He sees the situation slipping. He’ll scapegoat and then he’ll seize power. Trust me. This is how it always happens. We can’t wait to deal with it when we get there
