Sent my students an initial “we’re moving online” email and included some optional but recommended reading.

It is 1. Dangerous for them to be uninformed and 2. Deeply embarrassing for me personally to have my emergency management students wandering around uninformed.
Below are the articles I recommended – these are just "COVID-19 what the heck is happening" articles.

Given the subjects of my courses, I’ll also be opening a discussion board where they can ask specific questions as they come up throughout the semester.

This is just a start.

There is *widespread* confusion about the multiple declarations that have been made related to COVID-19.

I’ve noticed lots of advice for professors who are trying to move classes online but I noticed I hadn’t seen any about what this means for students.

As more universities move classes online for the remainder of the semester there are some important things to keep in mind.
I made it through about a week of orientation my freshman year of college before we were evacuated out of state for a hurricane. I had room in the car to pack one bag which ended up being half full of very heavy intro to psych textbooks.
I had never taken a college class before nor taken a class online all in the midst of an extremely stressful situation. Our university had made plans post-Katrina to move classes online in such a situation but it was the first time it was implemented and... it was a nightmare!

Today was one of the hardest in my career as a teacher. Desks sat empty while teachers scrambled at assemble resources that our students, who we have worked so hard with over these past 7 months, may or may not use. 2/
Our job is one to which their is no instruction manual. We encounter new challenges, with students, families and teaching new material each year. To do this job you have to love what you do. That's the only way people stick with it as long as they do and keep their sanity. 3/

Wired: Social distancing so that we do not overwhelm our healthcare system.

Tired: You have 12.75 hours to transition your classes to an online format, effectively kneecapping IT's ability to do anything as they are overwhelmed by faculty unprepared for this transition. 1/n
The first tweet is pretty specific to my university, but the following tweets are more general comments about how #highered should be handling this crisis.

If this is the threat that our leaders say it is, then we need to be decisive & find a way to close out the semester. 2/n
Forcing a sudden shift to online classes is not courageous & inspiring, it is exploitative. Extra, uncompensated labor on an indefinite basis for #faculty and #staff is unacceptable. 3/n

My university just announced that we are shifting all courses #online for several weeks due to #coronavirus. I spent the last month on jury duty & as a result had to unexpectedly move my class online with no notice. I've got some thoughts (thread): #AcademicTwitter #CovidCampus
Before you do anything else, take a minute & look at your syllabus & course schedule. One of the things I realized was that in an online setting there were a number of topics that made more sense in a different order than in the face-to-face scenario I originally laid out. (2/16)
Whatever your course topic is, at some point, you are going to stare into that webcam & think about lecturing for an hour. Don't do it. If you do decide to record a video lecture keep it short. Like under 10 minutes - although the research says they should be even shorter. (3/16)

In the last 65 days, Bombas has sent me 24 emails. 23/24 were 100% product or sales based.

That's roughly one PRODUCT #email every 2.5 days for the last 2 months.

I opened 3/24 (mass opened all today for image) and clicked on 1/23.

This is dangerous.

Email marketing is a commodity for DTC brands.

As a solid benchmark: about 30% of #DTC brands revenue should be coming from email marketing.

If you’re running $10 mil a year in revenue and email is driving 30% (or has the potential to drive 30% of your revenue), that’a $3 million asset. 😱

It needs to be treated as such.

First stop: Protect your list, focus on engagement.

Can we have a word about CVs? In general - but this is mostly tech based? Here we go.

Note, these are MY opinions and ideas about CVs, BUT, CVs I have helped work on, even in non-tech areas, have actually been *praised* for their clarity.

First off - a #CV is a 'sales document' and NOT a 'factual account of your life story'.

It is designed for one purpose - to initiate and guide a conversation. What conversation? Your interview.
AS such - TWO PAGES, PLEASE!! No more. No less. Everyone over 18 has two pages of stuff they have done.

ORDER - most recent first, please.

Structure - always tell me where and when. Where did you do the thing and when did you do it. Jobs, work exp, volunteering - always.

And here's why he's right...
There's a concept I read from Nassim Taleb which some of you are familiar with called, "The barbell strategy"

This is a term he uses for investing, making sure 90% of your capital is safe, then using 10% for "home runs" or big risk things...
In a way, Nate is describing this strategy with online business, it doesn't even have to be narrowed down to copywriting, it can be online biz in general...
