One thing I wonder about where "too bureaucratic", "demeaning" etc... came from is whether it is from young people who have very little experience of dealing with official processes.

I mean applying for passport, visa, mortgage, benefits, doing tax returns, having a baby....
All of this is quite daunting the first time you do it. Getting more confident at dealing with bureaucracy is part of growing up.

Having a baby for example is at once long, painful, bureaucratic, stressful, intrusive and often humiliating

Life isn't all rainbows and glitter.
Maybe its just misaligned expectations .... ?

Between young people not yet used to normal levels of bureaucracy when dealing with the state.

Suggests need for time, space & support for young people to grow up happy, rather than assume early legal sex change the answer.
