We have witnessed 40 years of policies that have, in effect, shredded the social safety net and divested in the public sector. We now face a crisis that shows that the role of government involves much more than maintaining the economy or providing for the national defense. 1/
As we come together as a nation to respond to this crisis, and recognize the dangerous incompetence of Trump, let us also acknowledge the bankruptcy of a political/economic philosophy that has this country by the throat and treats the most vulnerable as disposable. 2/
We will get through this painful and scary time. I am confident of that. But what kind of country we will be on the other side depends upon us. 3/
The effect of those 40 years, in my view, has been an anemic sense of the public good and a overriding belief that the private sector and philanthropy could do the heavy lifting when it comes to our most basic values.
And let me say this: that political/economic philosophy has NOT been the possession of one political party in this country.
