I'll preface this comment by saying that I'm a scientist, not an economist.
I've read many tweets claiming that "the @albertaNDP almost bankrupted Alberta last time".
So I looked at the Government of Alberta Annual Reports since 2011 & graphed their own non-partisan data. (1/21) Image
These annual reports are available to everyone, at alberta.ca/government-and… (2/21)
I graphed total revenue from all sources, total expenses (i.e what they govt of the day spent over 12 months), and the average price for a barrel of West Texus crude.
It's very simple, arguably simplistic, but that's more likely to open people's eyes.
Four things jump out.

Today I was driving in the NE in and around the neighbourhoods when I was about to turn around and head home when I saw someone flag me down.

A older gentleman and his girlfriend asked me if I had any water or anything to eat. @cmcalgary
I pulled over, put my flashers on. I got out to grab them some water and snacks and saw the older gentleman limping & in obvious pain.

When I say hobbling I mean every few steps he stopped to catch his breath because he was in so much pain.

That’s when I said I’d come to them.
I grabbed some bottles of water, snacks, some backpacks, and asked them if they needed anything else.

He told me his bandages had dried to his skin and that he was refused care at a place here in Calgary when he asked for a dressing change.

I am so mad. So Mad. Our #abhealth system is beyond broken. A dear friend and new mom is needing transfer from a rural hospital to #RDRHC for a procedure. A very necessary procedure to remove excess fluid around her lungs. 1/5
Today she was unable to get that transfer because of the gross mismanagement of @AHS_media and incompetence of @JasonCoppingAB, @jkenney and all the other @UCPCaucus shrills. Read that again, she was denied transfer for a chest tube placement, as there was no EMS available 2/5
So she sits, and worsens in an understaffed and ill-equipped rural site until one of two things happen. She will either worsen and require imminent transport and higher level care, or she will wait— uncomfortable and short of breath until such time that EMS can be procured 3/5

I do not discuss my experiences as a foster parent too often on social media. I would like to highlight an experience I had yesterday, not with our foster child, but with the professionals that support him. #ABGOV

1/11
My wife and I attended a “Success in School” essential the working professionals in this kid’s life met from 4 pm to 5 pm on a Friday to discuss the child’s past, present and to plan for their academic and personal future. Here’s the list of people attending:
2/11
School’s Family Wellness Worker (Lead the meeting)
Social Worker
School’s Student Support Facilitator
Classroom Teacher
Vice Principal
Two Foster Parents

I highlight the people in the room because each of them is working to improve this child’s life chances.

Getting a booster shot in Alberta for my partner and I … a rant. I booked our #COVID19 booster shot online using the #ahs website as per #abgov for this morning at 10am at a local pharmacy. Awesome, process seemed simple. Arrived this am at 10:02 bc it wasn’t well marked
.. there is a sign on the door saying they are out of Covid-19 shots. We go in anyway because surely they mean walk ins right? NOPE. No call, no text .. the pharmacy assistant is just “starting” to call people. We are annoyed but ok, go to the car and rebook.
After searching a 100km radius, we find two appts today for 5pm and 5:10pm in High River (we are in Calgary).. 40 minute drive but worth it to get it done before Christmas right? Ok, good to go. We do rapid tests (negative) and head to a family Christmas gathering.

This is hard to write but it is true for many. What I’m about to say is a harsh reality of what people go through.

What I am about to say is also the reason why a lot of people don’t ask for help.

People do not ask for help because of the fears and stigmas that exist.

#hope
Here Is Something to think about,

What if you were a #singleparent with a #child

You work full time for $15.00/hr

You take home roughly $960.00 per paycheck (bi-weekly after taxes)

#singleparent #parenting #Blessed #grateful #calgary #calgarylife #alberta #yyc

@EveryAlbertan
Your bills per month:

$1,000 or more for rent
$150 or more for cable/internet
$250 or more for utilities
$150 per month for car insurance

So let’s do the math

You bring home about
$1,920.00 a month

Your bills average about $1,500(give or take)

🚨😔😔😞What a day😞😔😔🚨

Is it ever going to get better?

How can there be so many people in need? So many people that are falling through the cracks?

It is so hard to keep going knowing we can only do so much…but when does one draw the line?

Who helps the helpers?
Today was a high stress and difficult to process day filled with so many people who are hurting and lost that it is heartbreaking💔.

We might have to make the difficult decision to close our doors. Too many people in need.

Again,

Who helps the helpers?
We normally take a few days on the weekend for self care.

We woke up to 171 phone calls, 83 text messages and 47 emails from people asking for help. Asking for direction.

People in Alberta are😟worried. Scared. Frustratingly frustrated with what has been happening in Alberta.

🚨WE🆘NEED🚨#YYC’s🆘HELP🚨

We are at a local superstore and we are needing Calgary’s help.

We are filling the last items needed for the special medical food hamper for this senior family. Can anyone help with this?

#Help #YYCCC #YEG #YEGCC #foodie #Food #hampers #HelpNeeded
The reason this is a unique hamper is because the senior gentleman we are helping is terminal and has severe dietary restrictions that have been set by his doctor

We have worked with his doctor to provide what he needs to be comfortable as he possibly can be.

This morning we saw something we will NEVER forget.

We were at the #Walmart in Southeast #Calgary. We were shopping for some groceries when my stepson saw someone take a package of meat and put it under their shirt and then slowly walk over to their cart. #Food #Hungry #Alberta
This person had very few things in their cart. My stepson knows what I do here at @HarvestHillsYYC & he asked if we could help them.

I said yes we could but that this person would feel ganged up on if we all walked over to them, so I told him to stay here and that I’d walk over.
I walked over to where they had their cart and said “I know what it is like to struggle. I would love it if you’d let me help you and I’d like to pay for your groceries.”

This person looked up at me and said “did you see me take the meat?” I said “yes I did. I’d like to help”.

With #ResignKenney continuing to trend, I want to talk a bit about what realistic options Albertans have for holding this govt accountable.

Let's be clear about one thing - there is no way Kenney will choose to resign. There are, however, other ways to take down a leader [1/8]
that has lost the moral authority to govern.

The typical process is to simply vote their party out in the next election. Unfortunately, the next #abvote is not until spring 2023, so w/ their legislative majority, we are likely stuck with the UCP for another 2 full years [2/8]
BUT WAIT!

That doesn't mean it isn't possible to force an election sooner or remove Kenney as Premier! Let's talk about how this could work.

There are 2 feasible scenarios, both of which involve UCP MLA's breaking ranks with their party.

To force an early election, we [3/8]

If you can help @HarvestHillsYYC Please do. They're unfairly being targeted by UCP Conservative Party Trolls & are being harassed by people who are going after their organization.
They've even gone as far as demanding Jenn retract any & all statements she made in regards to being critical of the current Alberta Government.

We are indeed dealing with a cruel & heartless government.
These EVERYDAY heroes, are the very people that are stepping up & filling the GAP that our government is refusing to fill.

The @Alberta_UCP can't see the damage that is being done to the province that I & others love so much. From Doctors to Parks, Everything is being attacked.

This is Cara's Story. **Names have been changed upon request and for protection**

Cara has gone through a lot as a child. Growing up she had difficulties in coping with traumatic experiences that she and her other family members both lived with and went through.
Ever since she was on AISH, Cara and others we have talked to all recognized that all the AISH workers that our daughter and others have had to work with have always reinforced to their clients the lifelong message that many clients were unworthy of support, care & medical care.
Cara and her sister grew up in a home that had a mother with serious mental health diagnoses as well as an alcoholic father who left when Cara was 9 and her sister was 6.

Canadian Election 202?
-------------------------------
As their leader, Scheer still speaks for the CONs.
I'll remember this and will be reminding Canadians of this when the writ drops again. Image
Can you even imagine the destitution if the CONs were in charge right now?
When Canadians are going to the polls, past performances by each party and past statements by their leaders must be integral in choosing how to vote.
Any Canadian voting for the CONs will be voting for a party who does not believe in SHORT TERM relief for Canadians during a "Stay Home" pandemic.
That is NOT a party worthy of running Canada.
That would NOT be MY Canada.
We are a Village.
Let's keep it as one.

The Cargill plant is set to open today...despite serious worker’s safety concerns and a legal action to stop its planned opening.

As of now, nearly half of the workers at the Cargill plant - 917 of 2,000 - have tested positive for the COVID-19.
Much is the same at the JBS plant in Brooks, which continues to be open despite repeated calls to close down. Together, there are more than 1500 positive COVID-19 cases tied to the outbreaks at these plants, two workers have died and at least five others are in the ICU.
Even more disturbing are the news that workers at these plants are being blamed for these outbreak and their communities are facing backlash and treated differentially. This is unabashed discrimination and it must stop.

So the Great Province of Alberta has hopes of passing the budget this week with an increased Healthcare Budget.....
.....There is only one gigantic problem: What about the 11,000 fired Doctors? What about the Radiologists and their Cancelled Contract? What about the upcoming Nursing Layoffs? Especially in the very midst of a global pandemic???
Care to respond to this @jkenney ? Oh I forgot.....someone already has your balls in their hand and controls you, your staff and the rest of your cabinet.

I sat and listened on the phone for hours with a mother who lost her child to suicide. You see this child didn’t want to be a burden to his family. This child didn’t want to make his family go bankrupt over medication and support this child needed.
This child once they turned 18 did the right thing & tried to go to school, get a good job and tried to contribute to society. This child was diagnosed with diabetes and schizophrenia and also was Autistic...and was told by a doctor that they would be never be able to hold a job.

Our economy is broken.

A thread for #ableg and #abpoli. 1/n
Our economy didn’t break recently. It’s been broken for awhile. And much of the reason is because the traditional business model for capital investment in Alberta O&G is broken. 2/n
Today’s stock market crash and the plummeting prices must be a wake up call for all of us, but particularly for the #abgov. 3/n

I am completely shocked by this! AHS’s funding for the Wilderness Treatment Base Camp (Enviros) has been cut - effective March 31, 2020. This is a publicly funded treatment program for youth 12-17 years old who are struggling with problematic alcohol and drug use.
We are failing our youth and families by eliminating funded programs for addiction treatment. Early intervention is critical for our youth ... it is about preventing long term addiction issues.

It’s funny how @jkenney and the @Alberta_UCP backtracks about the budget!
Kenney ditching the balanced budget narrative real quick UCPers expected the NDP to perform miracles Premier Jason Kenney says the novel coronavirus outbreak is hammering Albertas economy & may force his government to abandon its core election promise to balance the books by 2023
It does appear based on all evidence right now that there is a significant global economic downturn beginning right now Kenney said Friday at an announcement in Morinville, Alta.

The Victims of Crime Fund has been supporting a range of community & police based services across the province for more than two decades and is fully financed by a 30% surcharge on fines issued by police or imposed by the court – not by provincial taxes.
But the fund has also been available to individual victims of violent crimes to help deal with physical and psychological injuries as well as reimbursement for funerals and supplemental benefits to those who have suffered brain injuries.

From Valley Medical Clinic in Strathmore, Alberta.

Dear Patients of Valley Medical

As you may have heard, the government of Alberta has decided to terminate the Alberta Health contract with doctors, effective March 31st.
They have also decided to implement new changes to how healthcare is delivered starting April 1st.

These changes have been fought by Alberta doctors and the Alberta Medical Association since they were proposed in December.
Unfortunately for Albertans, the government decided to stop mediation between themselves and the AMA on February 14th.

There will be significant changes in the way Albertans receive healthcare as a direct result of these cuts.
