There's a joke I heard when I first became a CEO about advice given to a new CEO by their predecessor: I've prepared 3 numbered envelopes. When you hit a crisis, open them in order.
One day a crisis comes, CEO opens envelope & it says "blame your predecessor". CEO does so, crisis passes. A few months later, another crisis comes. Envelope 2 says "blame your predecessor". CEO does so, crisis passes again.
A few months later a third crisis comes. Message inside envelope 3 says "Prepare 3 envelopes".

Thinking a lot about that advice today.

Alright everybody: listen up. This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. The fragility of every institution that we used to rely on is being exposed. There are heroes to celebrated and devils to be exorcised. But that is for later. For now:
1/ Media: stop spreading lies. That includes the President's press conferences. They are getting people killed. I have constituents who are convinced this is a hoax and they need to go back to work. Take away his platform.
2/ Social media: you are media companies, not platforms. Get over this "I have no control over what people post BS". You do and you know it, you just don't want the liability. Do the right thing now and save lives.

There are so many lessons we are learning through this COVID-19 crisis about what matters. Who is important. Who we depend on. Most are inspirational - but take a moment to listen in this moment, and learn. Thread of interesting things I've heard over the last few days:
"Families of need are handling this well. They're problem-solvers and they have no choice. Families of means are yelling. They've lost control and they don't like that feeling."
Me: "In this moment, be civil to your front line workers. EMTs, public health workers, ER docs. They are stressed and have fewer resources than they need."
Constituent: "I work in a grocery store and I don't have gloves. Should I go to work tomorrow?"

One of the strangest stories of the discovery of an ancient ruin is that of the Victorian explorer and circus performer William Leonard Hunt.

He claimed to have discovered a lost, ruined city in Southern Africa's Kalahari Desert. But no one else has ever been able to find it.
Born in New York to strict disciplinarian parents, Hunt moved to Canada in the year 1843, at the age of 5.

One day, he snuck away from home and saw a troupe of traveling performers passing through his town. This began a lifelong infatuation with the circus.
Hunt began secretly practicing to become a performer himself, and trained to be a tightrope walker and strongman, finally taking on the stage name "The Great Farini".

Hunt took part in a number of famous tightrope walks, including over the Niagara Falls in 1860.
