/ I'm my department's disaster preparedness officer. Have had a hectic few days with #COVID19 planning, but the following thought occurred to me - Why you want an anesthesiologist or anesthesia provider on your disaster preparedness team:
/ We contingency plan every day. This is our normal state of being. What happens if x, then y, then z? How about 1, 2, & 3?
/ We start with the worst case scenario and work backwards. How do I know that all my patients *don't* have #COVID19? What if there is no oxygen? What if we run out of hospital beds?
/ We know how hospitals work. We get called to airways and clinical emergencies absolutely everywhere in the hospital. OR, ED, MRI, ward, ICUs. Cross-disciplinary coordination is our norm. And we can navigate through the bowels of the hospital...
/ We're cross-trained in critical care. No, not every anesthesia provider is an intensivist (at least in the U.S.), but we can all work a ventilator (it's called an anesthesia machine). And CRNAs train as ICU nurses.
/ We don't panic. Our MO is to be the calmest people in the room when everyone is losing their bowel contents.
/ We are experts at workarounds and re-purposing. Give us some tape and oxygen tubing and we can create magic. (Bonus points if you understand this gif)
/ That's all for now. I'm tired, but blessed to be able to help right now. Thanks to everybody who's trying to #FlattenTheCurve, in healthcare, public health, and the community.
Thanks everyone for the #anesthesia love. 🤗♥️
