The coronavirus math that has experts so worried: ventilators, hospital beds

1. Hopkins estimated the U.S. has a total of 160,000 ventilators available (an additional 8,900 in the national stockpile)

2. If we were struck with a severe pandemic like the 1918 Spanish flu, we would need more than 740,000 ventilators
3. The U.S. has an estimated 924,100 hospital beds + 46,800 to 64,000 ICU beds.

4. A moderate pandemic would mean 1 million needing hospitalization and 200,000 needing intensive care.

5. A severe pandemic: 9.6 mln hospitalizations & 2.9 million needing intensive care.

(Trump has resisted, alternatively insisting he's already done it and that he'll only do it if absolutely necessary.)

Bottom line: He hasn't *activated* it.
U.S. co's are doing a great job *voluntarily* making masks, gloves, ventilators desperately needed & running in short supply, Trump says.

American Medical Association President told @NBCNews philanthropy is NOT GOING TO CUT IT. Production must sync with pandemic modeling.
Whose job is that?

Trump needs to actually *use* the DPA to compel manufacturers to produce the *right amount* of items needed for the nt'l defense.

This ensures 1) U.S. supply = hospital demand 2) manufacturers can proceed w confidence there will be a market for products.

Only weeks after the initial reports of unusual illnesses in Wuhan, China, the first US case of #coronavirus has been identified. Spread of this new virus brings to mind the 2003 SARS epidemic. How similar/different is this outbreak from SARS? Some thoughts.
No approved treatments or vaccines available for these two viruses, though scientists have been working on a SARS vaccine and started work on a novel coronavirus vaccine. Containment of SARS relied on infection control, isolation, quarantine and other non-pharmaceutical measures.
Screening of international travelers for fevers/signs of illness is an aspect of both responses. Canada and multiple Asian countries screened millions of passengers but did not find a case SARS that way. WHO recommends against border screening for identifying cases.
