Thread. Giving the V-sign to captors. Around 15,000 Indian soldiers were captured in North Africa & Italy in #WW2. They were held by the Germans and Italians for up to 5 years, and almost none of their stories are known. 1/9
I am trying to track down relatives of these 15,000 Indian POWs. For example, in this group photo from a German camp for officers, there’s a #sikh officer in the back row. Was this your grandfather? 2/9
In Britain in the 60s and 70s, I grew up with images like these. POW stories were a staple, always featuring white men, usually officers, upper lips stiffened, trying to escape from #Colditz and Stalag Luft III. Where were the Indians?

sometimes a rest but marching all the day. For some soldiers like Marshal MacDonald it had been a wet start since Leipzig, where many soldiers had to swim through the river since the bridge was blewn up too early. Only a small part of those, who swam, still had their arms.
If the soldiers could not sleep inside of occupied houses, or in tents, it was a cold night in the meadows. Especially the meadows of the Kinzig have high ground water and are wet and cold at night. Bavaria had already changed the sides and joined the coalition already at

Meanwhile in #France,
"the peak of this second wave is over"

(according to the President in his Adress to the Nation):
Wait... "the peak is over" doesn´t mean "it´s back to normal"!

Confinement will only fall on December 15,
if there´s less than 5.000 new cases a day.
(today it´s ~9.000).

France is disappointed.🙁

Although they certainly can make it happen.
Meanwhile in #Switzerland:
(excess mortality of the second wave is significant)

Good news: fastest decrease in infections happens in the worst hit areas now.

As #COVID19 cases are found to spread, #Melbourne (city of ~5 million) tries to contain them by going into #Lockdown.
(The interview features the idea of a dedicated #Quarantine building - that would actually help, I guess)...
"People acting as if the pandemic was over was 'not the answer, it is part of the problem' ".

"The virus had leaked from postcodes already under the stay-at-home orders to other parts of #Melbourne."
(and beyond, it is feared).
Due to #Melbourne's outbreak, neighbouring South Australia is about to completely close it's borders to #Victoria.

(Nearly) no exceptions. And those essential few who are allowed in, will have to wear facemasks the entire time...

Vorpommern-Greifswald district (where rejections of #Gütersloh residents took place, yesterday)
has specific rules:
"Those who return from international risk areas (out of Germany) or whose Corona-Warning App has alerted them, need to report to authorites"
kreis-vg.de Image
In fact, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Corona-ordinance really prohibits entry of people from international risk areas AND german risk areas as well.
It's just not prominently featured on their websites.

(Overlooked that myself, hence deleted earlier tweet)

People from #Gütersloh district may have to scrap all their holiday plans anyway...

An official #Lockdown is just being announced for the entire district.
(for one week, as of now)

(1/3) In March, a redline set by @ManfredWeber for #Fidesz' continued @EPP membership was to safeguard @ceu's operation in 🇭🇺. He proposed to build a partnership b/w #Bavaria & #Hungary in the matter.

Months later, this hasn't come into being & the HU gvt blaims #Bavaria for it. Image
(2/3) with @w_heubisch whom I had the pleasure to meet some weeks ago, we wanted to know the position of the #Bavarian gvt on this.

👉 now we know: it bluntly rejects the Hungarian gvt's accusations!

Read the parliamentary question of Mr. Heubisch & the Bavarian gvt's answer 👇 ImageImage
(3/3) In case @ManfredWeber or @EPP had any doubts: #Orbán had no intention whatsoever to find a solution for @ceu. On the contrary, the story serves #Fidesz propaganda. The day CEU anounced it had to leave, he was probably jubilating, while 🇭🇺 was losing one of its best unis! Image

Last Tuesday, a political trial against members of the previous @govern, against social leaders of the main civil organizations of #Catalonia and against the former president of the @parlamentcat began in Spain #CatalanEU
The simple fact that this trial could take place brings #ShametoSpain and, therefore, to the entire #EuropeanUnion, whose main institutions have chosen to remain silent, when facing such a disgraceful situation where democracy is at stake #CatalanEU

In #Bavaria, as after recent elex in Sweden, commentators rushing to point to rise of far right. It’s absolutely significant that AfD now has seat in regional parliament. Important too to note AfD came 4th. Greens came 2nd
Takeaway from #Bavaria - voter disenchantment with traditional governing parties (CSU lost 10%; social democrats came 5th) is a continuing trend
But the trend does not automatically translate in to support for far right or populist nationalist parties. Greens did well this weekend at the polls in Belgium and in Luxembourg too
