Can't help thinking that the Coronavirus will have a massive rupture on international civil society organisations in the long-term #INGOs #ICSOs. #Shiftthepower. THREAD.
2/For one, travel restrictions will undoubtedly continue for some time. What does this mean for the INGOs who rely on their ability to be basically be ubiquitous?
3/We already know that many countries will use this as a way to clamp down on human rights by further restricting things such as freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly...so closing space will become an even stronger phenomenon
4/and International Civil Society who in some cases are less impacted by closing space than some local CSOs will lose any current immunity they may have to these restrictions
5/my prediction is that Coronavirus will make civil society more hyper local than before requiring more efforts to immediately #shifthepower to handle both the short-term implications of Coronavirus, but will also dramatically shift the long-term scenario too
6/the role of INGOs will be to create stronger solidarity mechanisms across communities but it will have to be done virtually
7/and INGOs will also have to step up some representation in International forums to make sure that civil society will continue to have a voice and be able to protect the most vulnerable in societies
8/Governments will also be struggling with managing the impacts so the services of civil society also becomes more important -- but again this will be hyper local, rather than international
9/The implication for #shiftthepower & #powershifters is that they need to quickly understand how the local will be impacted
11/And #ICSOs/ #INGOs must also start factoring this into their future scenario planning. How will they function and collaborate in a de-globalised post #Coronavirus world?
