Due to the rapidly evolving situation, I'm sorry to say that there will be no new #Charting episode this week. There's no shame in playing it safe. BUT - did you think I wasn't gonna make charts anyway? Let's do this in 280 characters or less! (THREAD)
#Onward tops the box office, despite barely eking out a $10 million weekend gross. #Bloodshot debuts in second place, but #IStillBelieve & its $12 million budget may be the real winners here. Ironically, after being pushed due to controversy, #TheHunt was barely noticed.
Just how bad was this weekend? Here's the gross for the second weekend in March for the last 10 years. COVID-19's first significant effects on the North American market are crystal clear. The bad news? This is just the beginning, as most theaters that were open are now closed.
Inside the Rain takes the per-theater crown, but brought in just over $8K in one theater. At one location, assuming it played 5 times a day from Fri-Sun, it would've only needed to sell approximately 60 seats per showing to take the top spot.
Here are the numbers for all international markets combined outside of North America. These would be exceptionally weak numbers for just one market - but this represent dozens of countries. What this shows is that the global film market is essentially non-existent at this point.
Here are the worldwide numbers, which include the final spark of the North American market. It's hard to believe, but multiple movies in next week's top five WORLDWIDE could have grosses totaling below $1 million. The global box office will be bringing in, essentially, nothing.
Here are some major releases delayed so far by the COVID-19 crisis. After the virus is contained, each studio will have a scheduling nightmare on their hands. Hard to believe, just two weeks ago, that all of these films had marketing campaigns in full swing.
It had to be done. The Countdown (?) to #NewMutants has been reset. As I've said before, in another situation, this could have been darkly humorous. Now the film moves back into limbo along with perhaps a dozen or more major releases, missing its 4th scheduled opening date.
Here's the 2020 Domestic Chart. This will remain, in effect, static for an indeterminate amount of time. All notions of what we thought this would look like just a few weeks ago are now out the window.
And finally, the 2020 Worldwide chart, which will similarly be frozen for quite some time. How this industry will recover and what that recovery looks like will be the story of the second half of 2020, after the (hopefully swift) resolution to this crisis.
Obviously, this is an unprecedented series of events, and as a box office enthusiast, I'd love to be able to break this down more. But - the health of others and ourselves has to be the #1 priority. Charting will return in full as soon as it feels like it's the safe thing to do.
Until then, I will be sharing what I can here as we head into the first weekend in modern history with no new releases, very few to no theaters open, and a lingering question mark about when things can return to normal. Thanks for #Charting along with me. See you soon.
