For the uninitiated, this means dozens of jurors drawn from a wide geographical area, squashed in a tiny room for hours on end every day, mingling with court staff who mingle with witnesses and defendants and judges and barristers. In buildings lacking soap and ventilation.
By insisting that short trials proceed as “normal”, @RobertBuckland is ensuring the highest possible turnover of trials, and therefore of people mixing with each other, in the shortest space of time.
