We’re not able to go knock on doors at the moment so we've been calling our neighbors to check in, to see if they need any support, and if they are aware of the support that's available.

We had some heart-warming chats w/neighbors & wanted to share some highlights.

1/x
One person we spoke with told us they danced in their living rooms to 60s soul music last night.

Another person told us they are out of work. They are an events manager & waiting for state aid. They are hoping it will come thru soon.
We told them about the Safety Net Fund that’s received 100s of donations already from the community.

Here's info about that if you want to see if you'd be eligible: medium.com/@safetynet/the…
As you can imagine, many we spoke with are frightened. They’re worried about getting sick & whether our crumbling healthcare system will bear the burden; worried about what kind of education children are receiving now that schools are closed, and education has moved online.
One person told us how many of the para-educators (teaching assistants) & security guards don’t get paid time off. We discussed how we've allowed the independent contractor model to seep into our work force, and why now was the time to fix that.
Many we spoke to told us how lucky they felt. They have enough supplies, and right now they are healthy and able to self-isolate at home. They don’t know what the future holds but they are counting their blessings for now.
When so much of what we read about is the breakdown in our society, it was heartening to hear so many folks concerned for their neighbors & communities. So many people we spoke with asked how can they help others. Bernie asked us to look out for one another and we're doing that.
Some folks we spoke with benefit from the Meals on Wheels. MoW provide such an essential and thankless service to our city.

Most folks were happy to simply chat.

We're all spending a lot of time online these days. Don't hesitate to pick up the phone and reach out to an old friend.

We're all in this together and we'll only get thru it if we look out for one another.
