Turns out quite a lot of workers are key- potentially quite a lot of kids still at school
I’d say there are some places in Britain, away from where a lot of the advanced service economy is concentrated, where perhaps the maj of the local workforce, or at the very least a sizeable minority, according to this list, would be key.
Some schools could still have a fair number of kids turning up.

NEW: Matt Hancock announces a new temporary hospital- the ExCel centre in London is being converted into the “Nightingale Hospital”
Nightingale Hospital will have two 2000 bed wards.
For a sense of the scale of this new hospital and this new problem- this is the interior of the ExCel centre.

Update on Sports Direct: am told stores are closed but contracted staff are being told to go into work as normal and are working behind closed doors. Zero hour staff have had shifts cancelled and facing prospect of no work even if they routinely work 40-45 hour weeks.
Another member of staff tells me: “if we choose to self-isolate, as I am, we’re only receiving statutory sick pay. In terms of lay offs the company is telling staff it has no knowledge of the government’s 80% scheme even though it’s all over the news.”
Another employee in Sports Direct tells me they’re being forced to come in as “security guards” and to do odd jobs and told by management that if they don’t do so they won’t get paid.

The PM has said that all non-essential shops are to close.

Nonetheless, employees of Sports Direct have received this email tonight. Its management has decided they are an essential service (as they supply exercise equipment) so as things stand will be staying open...
From a Sports Direct Employee: “I’d have thought head office would have a bit of compassion but apparently not...we are told to wear rubber gloves in work and that is it. No customers adhere to the 2 metre rule and management doesn’t care.“
“We are not being paid to isolate, we have to claim Uni Credit or SSP (they don’t help us apply)...they told us on 0hr contract to look for alternative work because they don’t have the hours to employ us. Only staff will be paid 80% wages on govt scheme we will lose out”

NEW: Have spent the morning talking to several doctors across the country, in London, the North East and the Midlands about how the #NHS it dealing with #COVID19.

What I’ve been told is eye opening. Please give this thread a read:

Multiple doctors told me that me that #COVID19 tests are taking up to 5 days to come back. In that time patients cannot be kept in isolation because of lack of space.

So in that 3-5 day period, if they have Corona virus they are exposed to staff and other patients.

Doctor in North East says they are running low on oxygen cylinders and ran out of FFP3 masks (those are the good ones) on Tuesday for all wards other than intensive care units.

NHS staff on other wards are at risk and wearing flimsy surgical masks, which aren't as good.

A Boris Johnson government would be the most right wing government in our history, far surpassing Thatcher’s governments. His cabinet is full of libertarians and Conservative nationalists. The idea that they are One Nation Tories is nonsense and laughable
The underlying ideology of Johnson and his ERG colleagues is fundamentally Thatcherite in nature. They believe in deregulated free market economics, low taxes, a small state, and erosion of workers rights. All this will be facilitated by a hard #Brexit or no deal Brexit

A thread about the #NHS

Last week I was admitted to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford with a mystery infection. Not having been in hospital since I had my children it was an eye opener and this is why...

1/
The JR Hospital is clean, well organised and well run. Staff are very busy but have "pathways" to help them deal most effectively with the rationing of medical services to patients.

2/
I didn't get the tests I needed in the end and so my illness remains a mystery.

As I was getting better I was now on a less urgent "pathway" and so would have these as an out patient. (But of course I should come back if in the meantime I got worse again.)

I wish to honour all those people who helped me throughout my life.

Those #NHS staff, my doctor who visited me as a baby and young child at my home free of charge.

The social housing tha allowed my parents to raise 5 kids.

The access to education, school dinners etc
The ambulance, police and fire crews that my family and I have relied on and be protected by.

Always save in the knowledge that no matter what happens to me I can walk into a Hospital without having to worry about what money I have on me.
That sense of safety and being protected by other human beings who have made it their life to protect and serve others regardless of their own personal problems, low wages or poor working conditions.

5th July 2018 will be the 70th birthday of our beloved #NHS.

This THREAD argues that it is in severe danger under this #Toryshambles government, with #Brexit posing an imminent & particularly invidious threat.

To #SaveOurNHS we must work tirelessly together to #StopBrexit.
1/ Today's devolved #NHS is a complex federation of tens of 000s of orgs employing some 1.7m workers. It's combined annual budget is just shy of £150bn. It handles, overwhelmingly successfully, almost a million patients daily.

With each box maybe 000s of orgs, & England only:
2/ Unresolved public health issues & a fast-expanding multi-morbid elderly population, coupled with chronic underfunding & the blowback from the butchery of social care since 2010 means the #NHS is pressured as never before.
